Dessert from Guangzhou?

RUXU 入续 is a brand that opened its first overseas shop in Singapore, with this Funan outlet as its international debut.

In China the brand already has locations in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai.

The founders seem to aim at reviving a modern version of traditional Cantonese dessert culture, blending handmade “tong sui” (sweet soups or desserts) with baked goods and contemporary café touches.

The first thing I noticed was despite a queue forming outside, the store was actually kind of empty.

It seemed like the team was letting people in only at certain timings.

Only guesses. As there was no sign, no heads-up, no staff at the entrance to enquire. Anyway…

Signature RUXU 入续 items include the Caramel Croissant Tart ($2.80), Clay-Pot Brewed YingDe Black Tea Yuen Yeung Latte ($6.50), Fresh Milk Ultimate-Mix ($8.90), Top-Tier Fresh Mango Pomelo Sago ($7.60) and Phoenix Milk Custard with Rice Wine and Mochi ($6.80).

Just to name a few. However…

The ordering system came with its own quirks. Some items showed as available, so I happily added them to my cart, only to discover they were sold out when I reached the payment page.

It seems they are still fine-tuning daily operations. Still, the service team was polite and tried their best to manage the crowd.

I started with the Fresh Milk Ultimate Mix ($8.90). This bowl carried quite a number of ingredients under the surface.

Grass jelly, lotus seeds, peach gum, red beans, taro balls and fresh milk make up the base.

The lotus seeds were soft, the peach gum had a chewy bite, and the red beans carried a gentle sweetness.

If you enjoy something refreshing with textures, this bowl keeps you busy in a good way.

Unfortunately, the Matcha and Taro Double Layer Milk Custard ($6.80) didn’t quite work for me.

The matcha layer had a sharp, grassy bitterness while the taro puree leaned starchy and thick.

Instead of balancing each other, they pulled in opposite directions. Well, like eating two separate desserts in the same spoonful.

For a drink, I chose the Clay Pot Brewed YingDe Black Tea Yuen Yeung Latte ($6.50), and the balance worked this time.

The tea had a floral and slightly honeyed note that paired quite well with the roasted coffee base. It surprised me more than expected, as some yuen yeung drinks can taste muddled.

There are also bakes such as the famed Caramel Croissant Tart ($2.80), Cacao Rich Dark Chocolate Ganache Bun ($3.50), French T45 Butter Croissant ($3.90), Torched Cheese Butter Croissant ($4.50) and Hokkaido Milk Shokupan ($5.20).

Prepared in small batches daily, availability depends on what time you visit, and your luck.

If you enjoy Cantonese-style desserts with a modern touch, RUXU 入续 is somewhere to consider, but let them iron out their stuff first.
