[Johor Bahru] I love my wanton mee, and finally made it early enough to try Restoran Ho Meng Kee 何明记云吞面. (The few times I visited this stall, they were either closed or sold out.)

Ho Meng Kee began as a family-run business several decades ago, building its reputation through consistency.

Note: not to be confused with the similar-sounding Ho Seng Kee.

They now supply noodles to numerous stalls across Johor, which explains why their name pops up in more than one corner of the city.

This stall is found on Jalan Beringin in Taman Melodies (near KSL and other cafe hopping spots).

I went straight for the signature dry Wanton Mee, available at RM8, RM9 or RM10.

My favourite part was indeed those duck egg noodles.

The noodles were thin and slightly firm, with a lively spring when you bite into them. They did not clump or turn soggy even after sitting for a few minutes.

The char siew was less memorable, towards the leaner side, sliced thinly and therefore was nothing really to shout about.

The wantons were small, neat, and consistent.

And oh… the pork filling inside tasted clean and lightly seasoned, with the sweetness of it all reminding me of those I ate during my childhood days.

One quirk: I noticed a small variation between bowls.

One bowl had more of that dark sauce, while the other had a slightly dry sauce proportion, meaning you must toss vigorously to coat every noodle.

Also, the house-made chilli paste might not be everyone’s favourite as there were parts that overshadowed the overall taste.

A bowl at Ho Meng Kee is comfort, and reminds you why classics stay classic.
