The new Clarke Quay Bar Chor Mee stall has drawn attention ever since its opening in the SinFoodie Food Court at Clarke Quay Central’s basement.

Oh, they spell “Bak Chor Mee” as “Bar” by the way.

Its arrival carries extra buzz: the hawker veteran known as “Uncle Andrew”, who once headed the kitchen at Orchard Bak Chor Mee, now leads this modest noodle stall.

He left the Orchard shop for less-hectic hours in a food court setting, trading late-night crowds for daytime office workers and dinner crowds.

When I visited in the early evening, there was a short, very manageable queue.

It felt different from the long waits people endured earlier at Orchard, but sufficient to signal interest.

The menu is straightforward. Signature Bar Chor Mee ($7.50 small, $9.50 large), Signature Mee Sua ($7.50 small, $9.50 large), Special Pork Ball Soup ($7.00), Signature Bar Chor Mee Soup ($7.00), Fish Dumpling Soup ($7.00), and Signature Pork Liver ($7.00).

Prices sit higher than your average hawker, but this is Clarke Quay after all.

I ordered both Mee Sua and Mee Kia to test the difference.

In many food-court versions, you get oversauced sloppy noodles, but this was okay. I did think the sauce could do with slightly better balance? A little more vinegar, and less of the chilli would be perfect.

The Mee Sua was decent but fell short of the perfect texture. It was soft and slightly heavy, missing that silky firmness that keeps mee sua lively.

The bowl came with a side of soup filled with ingredients like liver, meat balls, fishballs, fishcake and floating minced pork, and that turned out to be my favourite part of the meal.

The soup looked light but rich in flavour, with a natural sweetness from the pork.

The slices of liver were tender and cooked just right, though thinner than I expected. I missed the deeper flavour you get from thicker cuts, but the thinness made it easier to eat and less likely to overpower the broth.

The minced meat and fishballs were fresh and clean-tasting, with no strong aftertaste.

If you’re in Clarke Quay and craving Bak Chor Mee, this place is air-conditioned, easy to access, and you can finish your meal in under 20 minutes (not too crowded yet).
