If you’ve ever been jealous of the East side for having all the good food, this might cheer you up a little.

SUKIYA, Japan’s biggest gyudon chain, has finally opened another outlet in the West of Singapore with a shiny new spot at JEM and The Clementi Mall.

Sukiya Gyudon • Curry Singapore

For the uninitiated, SUKIYA is the go-to in Japan for quick, comforting rice bowls.

The kind you grab after work when you’re too tired to think but still want something hot, meaty, and reliable.

With over 2,600 outlets globally and more than 30 in Singapore, you can expect the same dependable comfort at value-for-money prices.

Even better, prices stay easy on the wallet, with no service charge, and GST already included.

SUKIYA’s goal is simple: to serve tasty, quality Japanese food that anyone in Singapore can enjoy, priced inexpensively so you can enjoy it any day of the week.

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of SUKIYA’s recommended bowls:

Gyudon ($4.90 for M)
SUKIYA has adjusted the meat-to-rice ratio recently for its trademark beef bowl, and it shows. You can get a medium Gyudon at just $4.90, which can be quite filling.

The beef came thin and tender, simmered in a soy-based sauce that’s just sweet enough to feel indulgent. And there’s enough beef to last through the rice, which is all anyone really asks for.

Each bowl is prepared with 100% single-origin Japanese rice, staying true to its focus on real Japanese quality.

If you want a bit more bite, go for the Value Combo (from $6.50) which comes with a main, a side, and your pick of miso soup or a drink.

Half Boiled Egg Spring Onion Gyudon ($6.90 for M)
This looked deceptively simple but turned out to be the one of the most satisfying of the lot.

The egg, perfectly runny, mixed into the warm rice and beef like a silky sauce.

They are definitely not stingy with the spring onions, which help cut through the richness and keep it from getting too heavy.

Signature Beef Yakiniku Bowl ($7.30 for M)
The Signature Beef Yakiniku Bowl took things up a notch.

Unlike the Gyudon, the beef here is grilled, not simmered, giving it a slight smoky aroma and a bit of chew.

Plus, they have just revamped the sauce, leaning towards sweet (reminding me of teriyaki) with a touch of savoury depth.

Kimchi Beef Yakiniku Bowl ($8.90 for M)
If you find the classic Yakiniku too plain, you can opt for the kimchi (my preferred), half boiled egg, or melted cheese.

I liked the kimchi because you get that mix of spicy, sour, and smoky-sweet all at once.

Chicken Yakitori Bowl ($6.20 for M)
This surprised me more than I expected (especially if you want a break from beef).

The chicken thighs were juicy and lightly charred, coated in a glossy sweet soy glaze that carried a whisper of smokiness.

Unagi Bowl with Beef ($14.90 for M)
A pairing I didn’t know I needed until it arrived. The unagi had that trademark sweetness and soft texture, with the sauce seeping gently into the rice below.

The combination sounds indulgent (and it is), but somehow it works. The beef on the side added a savoury note that grounded the richness of the eel.

Breakfast (from $4.90, available 8am to 11am at selected outlets, 5am to 11am at 24-hour outlets)
I had the Half Boiled Egg on Rice Breakfast, which came with a mini beef plate and miso soup. And it’s priced affordably from $4.90.

Like a choshoku, ‘assemble’ your own meal by mixing the egg over warm rice. The beef on the side is small but enough to start your morning right.

Matcha Latte ($4.50)
If you need something to wash the meal down, the Matcha Latte is smooth and creamy, made with Hokkaido milk and 100% Shizuoka matcha, with a slight bitterness that balances the sweetness nicely.
