[Bangkok] I was already making my way out of Song Wat, ready to call it a day.

That was when a soft light caught my eye, spilling out from a French-style patisserie inside Shun Lee Alley, surrounded on all sides by car mechanic workshops.

Cache Cache Pâtisserie sits rather quietly in Bangkok’s hip Song Wat neighbourhood.

Okay, I know ‘hidden find’ is almost overused, but this café really is quite hidden.

As for the story behind this patisserie, Chef Jean grew up in the Song Wat area and left home for nearly two decades to work and study pastry abroad.

He eventually returned to open Cache Cache right on his childhood turf.

Years in international kitchens, including five as a full-fledged pastry chef, have shaped every pastry in the display.

On my first visit, I fell victim to a classic patisserie problem: wanting to try everything.

Each tart and cake looked so carefully put together, and they included Rosé, Bisou Bisou, Éclat Noir, and Mille-Feuille. Beautifully named.

I was attracted to the Émilie tart as it was so pretty.

The tart started with a bright kalamansi curd layered over delicate almond cream.

The base of French almond tart was creamy and crisp, while the fresh pomelo pulp on top was sweet and tart.

The Soleil de Songwat was next on my list, but I ran out of space. This signature mousse is a tribute to the Song Wat neighbourhood itself.

At its heart was a compote of mango and passionfruit, tropical and bright, balanced by a light lime chiffon. Chrysanthemum mousse and airy chantilly added floral and silky layers.

Prices land around 250 to 300 baht per pastry, putting Cache Cache squarely in the serious-pastry bracket for Bangkok.

But you see where the money goes: quality fruit, fresh dairy, and the classy decor.

The atmosphere is calm like a European café, which contrasts with the gritty surroundings.

It is worth searching out, even if you walk past the alley twice before finding it.
