Carpenter and Cook started life in 2012 (over a decade ago!) as a charming artisan bakery‑café at Bukit Timah, known for its vintage furnishings and cakes.
And now, drum roll for the new offspring… Neighbourly at Pandan Valley.
To be honest, the location is a little out of the way.
In fact, not the easiest to reach without a car, or a long walk from the nearest bus stop.
It feels more like a spot for residents or those who already know about it rather than a place one might stumble upon.
That said, once you’re there, it feels like someone invited you into a friend’s two-storey loft.
On the ground floor, a simple display counter fronts a snug seating area.
Up the stairs, a corner with a sofa gives a friendly, lived-in vibe.
Light floods through tall windows onto terrazzo-topped tables and cushioned benches overlooking greenery.
The pastry menu is a mix of sweet and savoury.
As I wanted to have something savoury side, I found myself stuck for choices like Serrano Ricotta Apple ($11), Chicken Sausage Cheddar ($9), Asparagus Egg ($9), Shakshuka ($8), Ham Cheeses ($9) and Leek Anchovy ($10).
The Asparagus Egg Pastry ($9) was prepared upon order so that it would stay fresh and crisp. Appreciated the extra effort.
It seated scrambled eggs atop crisp, buttery pastry, then topped with slender asparagus and toasted almond slices.
The asparagus added a mild vegetal crunch, and I loved how it was different from the usual pastry.
There weren’t too many cakes left when I arrived, so hopefully you have better luck.
But you may find Raspberry Lychee Rose ($10.50), Lemon Meringue ($9.50), Carrot Cake ($10.50), Pistachio Raspberry ($11), Strawberry Shortcake ($10.50), Chocolate Chocolate ($11) and Chocolate Caramel ($10.50).
The Pistachio Raspberry Cake had a lovely moistness and nuttiness, layered with a slightly sharp band of tart raspberry jellée.
It wasn’t overly sweet, which kept it from feeling like dessert overload.
Neighbourly marries Carpenter and Cook’s baking street cred with a laid-back loft vibe.
If you live nearby or don’t mind the ‘trek’, it’s a relaxing spot to slow down with a carefully made pastry, a decent cuppa, and no rush.
