With super popular Messina Gelato just a short walk away, Mondo could prove to be a worthy contender for dessert-seekers at Telok Ayer.
The fact that it stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays gives it an edge for anyone craving a late-night scoop.
Mondo Gelato is found at 92 Amoy Street, not too far away from the food centre.
You could drop in for a quick cone after lunch or settle in for a slow dessert session after dinner.
I realised it is not the typical grab-and-go ice cream parlour, which usually goes for a more colourful, youthful look.
The interior is dressed in deep red leather booths, marble tabletops and warm lighting that feels a little glamorous without being intimidating.
The menu offers eleven flavours at any one time, and you are free to taste before you choose.
Mondo’s line-up looks legit, from classics like Sicilian pistachio, Piedmont hazelnut, Valrhona 61% chocolate and banana salted caramel.
There are also more playful options such as honey lavender, brandy and raisins, sweet-sweet corn, Shizuoka matcha, blue cheese with candied pear and toasted white chocolate with strawberries.
If you prefer sorbets, they include lemon sake, cherry and tequila, passion passionfruit and pineapple makgeolli.
Prices are $7 for a single scoop, $10 for double, $12 for triple, $24 for pints and $1.50 for a cone.
Not the cheapest around, but I suppose gelato prices are slowly creeping up.
On the safe end, I really liked the Sicilian pistachio.
It was smooth and dense, with a nutty fragrance that came through immediately and a roasted note that lingered well after each spoonful.
It had enough creaminess to feel indulgent without being heavy.
I also chose the toasted white chocolate with strawberries to complement it.
The toasted white chocolate with strawberries leaned sweet, the white chocolate bringing a buttery richness and the strawberry adding small bursts of acidity. Nice too.
Happy news for me: Mondo uses ONA Coffee’s Maple blend, roasted in Canberra (one of my favourite coffee shops from Australia).
They used the Maple blend, designed for milk-based drinks, with a bold body and flavours of caramel, biscuits, nuts and gentle warm spices.
The latte was smooth yet full-flavoured, making it an easy companion to the gelato.
With midnight hours on the weekend, Mondo is ready for those who believe gelato tastes better when the rest of the city is winding down.
