[Bangkok] F.V Song Wat is not your average café.
I thought for a while what FV stands for. Turned out to be Fruits & Vegetables, and it wears that identity proudly.
Set along Song Wat Road, it sits inside an old shophouse, with weathered bricks, a makeshift wooden house built right in the centre, and art scattered across the walls.
So creative, so quirky!
To be honest, walking in feels almost like stumbling into a Thai friend’s slightly eccentric living room. If your friend was an artist and obsessed with fruit and vegetables.
The menu at FV Song Wat puts fruit and Thai ingredients at the forefront. It is not one of those cafés where you sit down and automatically order a cappuccino and a croissant.
Here, you get fruit-based drinks, local desserts, and snacks with strong flavours and curious combinations.
Think Watermelon Granita with Sweet Dried Fish & Crispy Shallot (THB 145), Guava Granita with Salt & Chilli Sauce (THB 135), Shogun Orange Granita (THB 155), and Mixed Fruits in Aromatic Ice Syrup (THB 155).
My friend wanted to order the Watermelon Granita (THB 145) and I was half skeptical. I mean, it came with dried fish and crispy shallots.
The first spoonful made me pause. The ice-cold watermelon hit first, then the salty crunch from the fish followed.
Strange or surprise? You decide.
The granita felt less like a dessert and more like an experience, which, honestly, summed up the food here in general.
The drinks menu reads like a line-up of Thailand’s greatest hits, but with a twist.
Drinks feature Roselle & Pandan Juice (THB 105), Zedoary Shot (THB 80), Thai Red Berries Juice (THB 120), Iced Sleeping Grass Tea (THB 110), Gotu Kola Tea served with edible essential oil honey (THB 120), and Hot Sleeping Grass Tea (THB 185).
Herbal concoctions, some made from roots or local leaves, brought a slightly bitter and earthy flavour profile, closer to medicine than a soft drink.
If you like your drinks sweet and simple, you might have to recalibrate your expectations.
But I’d recommend giving these a try, just to get a taste of how Thais have used fruits and herbs to refresh themselves for generations.
As for the atmosphere, FV Song Wat is quieter than most cafés in this part of Song Wat Road.
Two more tips I will leave with you.
There are various Thai-style melt-in-your-mouth cookies to get, each offering a crumbly, delicate bite that pairs well with the drinks.
Also, if you are curious, there’s a narrow staircase to head ‘upstairs’.
It’s worth a look if you want a different view or just a quiet spot away from the main floor.
