While navigating the lanes of Talad Noi, one of Bangkok’s oldest neighbourhoods, I chanced upon Citizen Tea Canteen.
Walking past mechanic shops and historic houses, the tea house’s bright orange entrance was impossible to miss.
I stepped inside and felt like I had wandered onto a film or magazine photoshoot set.
Walls were splashed with bold colours, shelves stacked with hand-thrown ceramics, and not a spot of clutter in sight. Stylish without trying too hard.
This is not your average tea shop. Citizen Tea Canteen serves up tea with a level of detail.
The menu lists teas drawn exclusively from Thai provinces, from Chiang Rai in the north to Songkhla in the south.
Sourcing tea locally is a point of pride, and the menu even lists which mountain or region each leaf hails from.
The Thai tea house offers blends like Vanilla Sky (THB 120) with hints of cacao, Dusty Dawn (THB 120), which is nutty and woody, Sweet Sunrise (THB 120) with bright vanilla notes, and Thai Milk Tea with Coconut Flower (THB 140) which adds a twist of coconut and a sprinkle of coconut flake.
They also allow you to choose your level of sweetness.
I tried the Blend No. 1 Vanilla Sky and it did not disappoint. The first sip delivered a smooth wave of vanilla, with a tea base that held its own.
The vanilla came through clearly but didn’t mask the natural tea flavour. If I needed to nit-pick, I wished it was deeper and fuller-bodied.
If you’re lucky, catch the monthly special.
Citizen Tea Canteen delivers a professional Thai tea experience with a Bangkok soul and a touch of fun.
And it’s such an artful space, even if you are just here for the photos.
