Osaka may be about neon lights and energy to many, but the Tosabori River brings a rare calm.
Walk its banks and you’ll spot locals and visitors slipping into riverside cafés for a breather. There’s something special about grabbing a coffee while boats drift past and city life slows down.
After a few days of city buzz, I decided to make my way to Embankment Coffee.
It is located along the Tosabori River in a restored rowhouse from the Taisho era.
It may look understated from the outside. Step in, though, and the scene changes.
Tall windows pour natural light over simple wooden tables and the faint sound of jazz floats by.
Looks like a suitable place for coffee dates.
Embankment Coffee roasts its beans on site, mostly focusing on light and medium roasts from countries like Kenya, Rwanda and Honduras.
The lighter roast brings out natural flavours and clean profiles.
If you are used to dark, smoky brews, you might find the cups here a bit gentle.
The menu covers a tight selection of black coffee options such as Marciano Tomazini from Brazil (¥800), Belarmino Contreras from Honduras (¥750), Costa Rica San Juanillo (¥750), and Inacio Urban from Brazil (¥600), with an iced version available for each at a slightly higher price.
Espresso drinks include Latte (¥650), Oat Milk Latte (¥730), Mocha (¥750), and Cappuccino (¥600), plus a straightforward Americano (¥650).
I ordered the Oat Milk Latte, and they used the Honduras Belarmino Contreras beans.
The beans brought a light fruitiness, just enough to notice but not too much. There was a hint of plum and something almost floral, which played well with the oat milk.
Overall, the texture was smooth and easy to finish. If you prefer a lighter, less creamy latte but still want clear coffee notes, this is a good pick.
For something sweet, there’s Cinnamon Cheesecake (¥600), Linzer Torte (¥600), Banana Cake (¥550), and Toast with Butter (¥400) rounding things out.
While the cake was honest and homemade, it did not exactly blow me away. If anything, it worked best as a coffee sidekick.
I appreciated the riverside setting. Now and then a sightseeing boat drifts past, giving you something to watch between sips.
The view, much like the coffee, asks you to slow down and pay attention.
There is a calmness here that feels peaceful in the very energetic Osaka.
