[Penang] This is one Apom Manis you shouldn’t miss in Penang.
Ravi’s Claypot Apom Manis sits quietly inside Keat Hoe Coffee Shop (previously known as Swee Kong) on Jalan Burma in George Town, looking just like any other apom stall.
It has been around since 1920, handed down through the same family for more than a century.
The current owner, Balasivan Nilumagan, continues the tradition started by his father.
There are no shortcuts here.
The Apom Manis, costing RM6 for five pieces, is made fresh to order.
Each one cooks in a small claypot over a slow charcoal fire. You can see the care that goes into every pancake.
The batter, a simple mix of rice flour and coconut milk, transforms into something much better than it sounds.
When I took my first bite, I realised why the fuss.
The centre stayed soft and fluffy, while the edges were golden and lightly crisp.
A coconut fragrance hit me before the first bite, and the taste was gentle but memorable.
Sweet enough to enjoy but never over the top.
Though I say you should eat it hot, straight from the pot, as it makes all the difference. Cold apom just would not be the same.
The coffee shop itself is no-frills. I will also recommend having the local kopi, Hokkien Mee, Penang Char Kuey Teow, and Wanton Mee (from next door shop) if you have the stomach space.
After being crowned with a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand, Ravi’s Claypot Apom Manis got even more popular and is usually sold out by 9:30am.
Another reason to get here early and hungry.
