This Muslim-owned eatery is flipping the script on traditional South Asian food, swapping curries and naan for spiced-up burgers, masala fries, and slushies with a local twist.

Yes, I am talking about Mahmud’s Tandoor, now located at 20 Kandahar Street, Kampong Glam.

Mahmud’s Tandoor started as a home-based business, when founders Siraj Aziz and Nasyirah Parveen left their careers to sell tandoori wings and teh tarik using a family recipe.

Their tandoori burgers took off, leading to pop-up success and eventually this full-fledged three-storey outlet near Sultan Mosque.

The restaurant’s menu features a selection of burgers, with the OG Tandoori Burger ($12) being the must-have choice.

There’s also the Crispydoori Burger ($12), and Tempehdoori Burger ($11) as a vegetarian option.

The OG Tandoori Burger ($12) consists of baked tandoori chicken thigh, tangy mint yoghurt, and sliced onions, all within an artisanal brioche bun.

You get the smoky flavour of the chicken first, then the cool yoghurt kicks in. Not too spicy, not bland.

The bun’s soft but holds together. It’s messy in a good way. However, I did wish it was served hotter as it felt lukewarm.

The fries deserve a mention. The Masala Fries are thick and come with a proper dusting of spices. They don’t skimp on flavour.

I dipped them in harissa mayo, which gave them a nice kick. If you’re hungry, the Loaded Chicken Masala Fries go all in.

Drinks are playful and colourful, such as the Chai Peng Slush ($5), Bandung Slush ($5), and Slush of the Day ($5).

The Chai Peng Slush tastes more like a classic teh peng but blended into a smooth, icy treat that’s perfect for the heat. A stronger spiced tea flavour would have been great.

The place gives off a friendly vibe. Bright yellow walls, comfy benches, and a lit-up rug on the wall that makes you want to stick around a little longer.

Mahmud’s Tandoor provides a fusion of South Asian spices with familiar fast-food formats.
