For office workers, a Swiss Roll may just be that afternoon pick-me-up.
Soft sponge, smooth cream, rolled up into a neat spiral—it’s light, easy to eat, and always looks good.
Dalaland Bakery, which specialises in Swiss Rolls sits quietly along Shenton Way, ‘hidden’ between offices and cafés such as Double Shot Coffee.
I dropped by after seeing a few photos online (enticed by the sight of a baby blue Swiss Roll) and figured I’d see what the fuss was about.
The place is easy to miss if you’re not looking for it.
It’s small, more of a grab-and-go spot than one you’d lounge in. A few camping-style seats outside, nothing fancy.
Their main thing is Swiss Rolls. All are made with a soft sponge and filled with whipped cream that’s light and less sweet.
Pick from Vanilla Maple ($8.40 per slice, $25 for whole roll), Classic Chocolate ($8.90 per slice, $26.5 for whole roll), or Mango Citrus ($8.50 per slice, $25.50 for whole roll).
There are also the Intense Matcha ($8.90 per slice, $26.50 for whole roll), Lychee Rose ($8.50 per slice, $25.50 for whole roll), and French Earl Grey ($8.50 per slice, $25.50 for whole roll).
The French Earl Grey ($8.50) looked too pretty to pass up with its light blue sponge and neat swirl.
The flavour leans more towards the creamy earl grey mousse in the middle, which is fragrant but not too strong. There’s a slight bitterness from the tea, softened by the whipped cream.
Surprisingly, the Classic Chocolate ($8.90) is the safer but more satisfying choice.
It has a rich, cocoa-forward sponge that’s moist but still holds its shape well. It’s not overly sweet, which works well with the thick swirl of chocolate and light and airy cream filling.
Prices are what you’d expect for a city spot, not cheap, but not shocking either.
The rolls are solid and fresh. If you’re nearby in the CBD and want something light and not too sweet, it’s worth a stop.
