If you ever find yourself wandering through Redhill Food Centre, you may easily miss this Mee Siam and Lontong hawker stall.

Jia Xiang Mee Siam 佳香 is no-frills, has a faded signboard, with laminated newspaper clippings stuck to the front like quiet trophies.

Well now, the stall is also newly recommended in the MICHELIN Guide Singapore 2026 with a Bib Gourmand.

This is a one-woman operation that’s been running on sheer grit and old-school heart.

I recently rewatched Old Taste Detective (古早味侦探), which featured this stall in an episode hosted by Kym Ng.

The hawker started helping her mother cook and sell food after her father passed away when she was in Primary 5. By 11, she had quit school to keep the business going.

More than 40 years later, she’s still at it, using the same recipes passed down from her mother, who’s now in her 80s.

The stall also sells Lontong ($3.50), but Mee Siam ($3.50) is the main draw here. I must say it is pretty generous.

You can also add other ingredients such as fried egg, fried tau kwa, ngoh hiang, fish cake and more (depending on what’s available).

Alongside the usual rice vermicelli, hard-boiled egg, tau kwa and tau pok, you can also find bits of omelette, chive cubes, and two types of chilli – hae bi (dried shrimp) and belacan.

The gravy itself is a little sour, slightly to the sweet side, and slightly spicy. However, some people may find it a bit greasier than usual.

See these crispy fried flour bits that look like croutons? They stay crisp even after sitting in the gravy.

Everything here is made from scratch. She fries her own chillies, mixes her own sambal, and even makes the fried crispy bits herself.

For $3.50 per bowl, it’s really value for money.
