Blue Bottle Coffee finally landed in Singapore, tucked into a sleek, wood-toned space at Lumine, Raffles City Singapore.
Quick bit of background: Blue Bottle Coffee was founded in 2002 by James Freeman in Oakland, California.
Inspired by the rich history of coffee culture, Freeman named the company after Central Europe’s first coffee house, Hof zur Blauen Flasche (The Blue Bottle).
Starting as a small roastery, Blue Bottle quickly gained a following for its commitment to freshness and quality, serving coffee within 48 hours of roasting.
Those who’ve had it in the US, Tokyo, Seoul, or Shanghai are probably curious to see if it lives up to the hype here. This outlet is after all the brand’s Southeast Asian debut.
The space features that unmistakable Blue Bottle vibe — clean lines, warm wooden textures, a sleek coffee bar, and plenty of natural light.
If you’re into that calm, Scandinavian café vibe, you’ll like it. Though it’s not the kind of cosy spot you’d lounge around in for hours.
Prices are high, even for Singapore. Expect to pay $8.50 for a basic Latte, with an additional espresso shot at $3.
Just for comparison, a Blue Bottle Latte goes for 657 Yen (about SGD6) in Tokyo. You’re definitely paying for the brand and experience.
Other espresso-based classics include Espresso ($6.50), Macchiato ($7.00), Americano ($7.50), Gibraltar ($8.00), Cappuccino ($8.00), Latte ($8.50), and Mocha ($9.50).
For drip coffee lovers, there’s the Blend ($10) with an option to add milk (Au Lait).
The NOLA New Orleans-style iced coffee ($8), cold brewed with roasted chicory and sweetened with milk and organic cane sugar, is one of Blue Bottle’s signature drinks.
While some may get used to the taste, it’s a fan favourite for its bold, smooth and creamy flavour.
Food-wise, they’ve teamed up with Bakery Brera, so you’ll see a few local twists.
The classic ones are the Croissant ($7.00), Pain Au Chocolat ($8.00), Almond Croissant ($8.00), and Triple Cheese & Turkey Croissant ($8.00).
The items to get are the Singapore-exclusive Coconut Kouign-Amann ($8.00) with caramelised pastry and toasted grated coconut, and the Pandan Canelé with Kaya ($6.00) which has a custardy pandan interior and a soft kaya centre.
The café also features a selection of merchandise, including mugs, tumblers, coffee filters, and tote bags.
However, you may find them slightly on the expensive end, even pricier than those in other countries.
If you’re already a Blue Bottle fan, you’ll probably be happy. If you’re just curious to see what the fuss is about, it’s worth a visit once the hype settles.
