[Bangkok] I had seen Tonchin Ramen a couple of times before finally deciding to give it a try.
With its reputation for serving authentic Tokyo-style ramen and even earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand in New York, my curiosity got the better of me.
Tonchin Ramen has multiple outlets in Bangkok, including The Mercury Ville at Chidlom, Siam Paragon, La Villa (BTS Ari), The EmSphere, and One Bangkok (B1 level).
Tonchin was founded in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district in 1992 by brothers Katsuhiro and Motohiro Sugeno.
Over time, their dedication to authentic flavours and craftsmanship led to expansion beyond Japan.
I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype, especially since Bangkok has no shortage of solid ramen spots.
So, I stopped by their EmSphere outlet, and it is really a eat-and-you-go type of place.
The staff are quick and straightforward, so do not expect ‘restaurant’ type of service.
Main bowls include Tonchin Classic Tokyo Tonkotsu Ramen (THB 240), Smoke Ibushi Ramen (THB 260), Chashu Stock Tokyo Tonkotsu Ramen (THB 320), Tokyo Ramen Light (THB 190), Miso Soba (THB 250), Chashu Steak Spicy Tan Tan Ramen (THB 380), and Spicy & Tan Tan Ramen (THB 290).
There are also rice dishes that include Shokado Rice Ball (THB 80), Grilled Wagyu Summer Rice Ball (THB 250), and Chashu Don (THB 160).
I had the Classic Tokyo Tonkotsu (THB 240) which is a safe choice, with its deep, creamy pork broth that clings to every strand of noodle.
It’s rich but not overwhelming, making it easy to finish a whole bowl without feeling too heavy.
The chashu is melt-in-the-mouth soft, adding another layer of satisfaction.
The Gyoza (THB 120) here deserve more attention, served sizzling hot on a cast iron plate.
One bite makes a difference. The crisp, golden bottom gives way to a juicy, well-seasoned filling.
They’re light enough to not overshadow the ramen but still packed with flavour. I find them best dipped lightly in vinegar rather than drowning in soy sauce.
Price-wise, Tonchin sits comfortably between affordability and quality.
A bowl of ramen for just under 300 baht feels reasonable for the effort put into the broth and ingredients. A filling meal without breaking the bank.
