Qinde Egg Tart at Whampoa Makan Place is a humble little Portuguese Egg Tarts stall – not the typical hawker food, with an interesting backstory.
The hawker, Robbie Liang, spent over a decade in China before bringing his take on Portuguese Egg Tarts back to Singapore.
His wife, a passionate baker from Shandong, developed the recipe, and now he sells these pastries fresh daily.
The tarts are available in original, pandan and chocolate flavours.
Priced at $1.80 each, this is considered pretty reasonable.
The first thing you notice is the crust – it’s crisp, flaky, and has that nice golden colour. It feels slightly greasy to the touch, but it doesn’t bother me too much.
When you bite into it, there’s a satisfying crunch, followed by the smooth, eggy custard inside.
It’s not overly sweet, which works well if you don’t like desserts that are too heavy.
The balance of textures is nice, and they taste best when fresh out of the oven.
If you’re someone who enjoys egg tarts but finds the usual ones too sweet or too rich, this might be a good middle ground.
The Pandan Egg Tart adds a local twist to the classic. The custard is infused with pandan, giving it a subtle green hue and a slightly fragrant aroma.
The flavour is mild, with a gentle sweetness. The pandan taste isn’t overpowering — it’s more of an accent rather than the main event.
Note that if you get them later in the day, the crust might lose a bit of that crispness, but a quick reheat should do the trick.
It’s worth grabbing one (or maybe a few) while they’re still warm.
