Spicy Wife Nasi Lemak has been on my radar for a while, and with all the social media mentions about its Malaysian-style Nasi Lemak, I had to give it a shot.
Found in a corner stall at Level 2 of Amoy Street Food Centre, this stall has been making waves for its affordable yet generous portions.
Given its limited opening hours on weekdays, I made sure to get there early, and even then, there was already a queue forming.
A good sign, I figured.
The stall, run by a Malaysian-born hawker, offers a focused menu. I did notice that he’s a ‘one-man show’, handling all the orders alone.
Main options include Aromatic Chicken ($7.50), Chicken Rendang ($7.50), and Mutton Rendang ($9.50), all served with fried egg, ikan bilis, peanuts, and chili.
Customers can also opt for add-ons such as extra rice ($1.00), egg ($0.80), ikan bilis ($0.80), peanuts ($0.80), and extra chili ($0.50).
The Aromatic Fried Chicken ($7.50) came with an ayam goreng berempah with a crisp, darker-brown exterior.
It was said to be marinated overnight with a blend of eight spices, including lemongrass and cumin.
When I received the plate, I noticed the chicken looked darker than usual (maybe even over-fried), but thankfully the meat was surprisingly tender and well-seasoned.
The marinade had seeped into the chicken, ensuring that every part, even the inside, was infused with flavour.
Unlike some versions that could be dry, this one remained relatively juicy, which was a testament to the careful preparation.
I enjoyed the rice too. It was fragrant and well-cooked, though the coconut flavour was on the milder side.
But I could imagine some might prefer more fragrance and creamier texture.
The sambal started off on a sweet note before the spice crept in towards the end, delivering a slow but noticeable heat.
It was not the kind of sambal that would hit you straight away; instead, the heat built up slowly and paired well with the chicken.
The accompanying sides of fried egg, ikan bilis, and peanuts were fairly standard.
The one thing that sets Spicy Wife Nasi Lemak apart is its portion size. At $7.50, the serving is generous, particularly the sizeable chicken pieces.
Additional note: Spicy Wife has since expanded beyond Amoy Street with Spicy Hubby at The Centrepoint, a larger dine-in concept serving the familiar Ayam Berempah alongside Rendang, Gepuk and more side dishes.
