Don’t be fooled by the name. This eatery is more than a snack bar, with a team of efficient servers, good cooks, and a wide range of zi char style local dishes.
New Station Snack Bar on the fifth floor of Far East Plaza, is one of those spots you might not notice at first glance.
There is also a New Station Rice Bar at Fortune Centre.
It’s a simple, no-frills kind of place, with basic seating and a bustling atmosphere.
If you come during peak hours, be prepared to squeeze in next to strangers. It’s part of the experience.
The menu is extensive. Their rice sets include popular choices like Salted Egg Pork Rice ($8), Marmite Chicken Rice ($7.50), and Assam Crispy Fish Rice ($9.00).
Other options feature Sweet and Sour Chicken Rice ($8.00), Black Pepper Chicken Rice ($8.00), and Kong Poh Chicken Rice ($8.00).
Almost everyone seems to be here for the Salted Egg Pork Ribs Rice ($8).
The pork ribs are coated in a thick, creamy salted egg sauce with bits of curry leaves and chilli padi. The first bite packs a punch – rich, savoury, and slightly spicy.
The ribs themselves are tender, and the sauce clings to the meat in all the right ways.
The Marmite Chicken Rice ($7.50) is a satisfying dish that delivers a mix of sweet, savoury, and umami flavours.
The chicken pieces are well-coated in a glossy, sticky Marmite glaze that gives off a rich, slightly caramelised taste with a hint of bitterness from the yeast extract.
For sharing plates, there are meat dishes like Salted Egg Pork ($15/$22), Butter Milk Pork ($15/$22), and Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs ($15/$22). Chicken dishes include Marmite Chicken ($14/$21), Kong Poh Chicken ($14/$21), and Prawn Sauce Chicken ($15/$22).
Seafood options range from Assam Crispy Fish ($18/$24) to Salted Egg Prawns ($20/$30) and Chinchalok Lime Sotong ($18/$27).
Those looking for greens can choose from Stir Fry Green Dragon Vegetables ($13/$18), Sambal Kang Kong ($10/$15), or Fermented Beancurd You Mai ($10/$15).
Some of the dishes are not bad, but nothing particularly memorable compared to the more standout dishes on the menu.
I also found that the vegetables lean towards the saltier side.
Prices here are reasonable, especially considering the location. You don’t often find a hearty meal for under $10 in Orchard.
Service is fast, with dishes arriving in about 10 to 15 minutes, even when it’s busy.
The biggest downside is probably the cramped space and the noise. It’s not the most relaxing dining spot, but if you don’t mind the hustle and bustle, it can be worth a visit.
