Every month or two, there will always be a café that captures the attention of café lovers in Singapore.
Average Service at Jalan Besar happens to be one of them.
Before you wonder if the name is a self-fulfilling prophecy, the service wasn’t bad, considering they were quite packed and short-handed during their opening days.
With a name like that, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but it turned out to be anything but average.
I would describe the vibes as effortlessly cool with a touch of retro charm.
The bold blue seating and geometric furniture give it a stylish yet playful look, while the open kitchen and conversation pits add a communal, laid-back feel.
There’s a creative energy here, from the lighting fixtures to the branded uniforms hanging neatly on display. It feels trendy without trying too hard.
The menu at Average Service offers a mix of brunch classics, hearty mains, and pastries.
Note that mains are only available from 11am, and some items may sell out due to ingredient shortages.
Popular choices include Thick Slab Bacon ($26.00), Average Chilli Egg Toast ($20.00), which comes with feta cheese, in-house chilli oil, and shredded chilli on sourdough.
Pasta lovers can try the Mentai Handkerchief Pasta ($24.00), made with in-house mentaiko sauce and bacon, or the Aglio Olio with Seared Scallops ($22.00), which includes spaghetti, garlic, chilli padi, and grated parmesan.
I had the Thick Slab Bacon ($26.00) which totally reminded me of the signature at Fran’s Bangkok.
The maple-glazed slab bacon is thick-cut and has a smoky, caramelised edge that pairs well with the buttery Australian-style spiral-folded eggs.
The eggs are creamy and soft, almost melting into the sourdough toast underneath. The bacon unfortunately had too much of the fatty parts, and might not be for everyone.
As for drinks, there are plenty of interesting options.
There’s the Baby Blu Matcha Latte ($7.50), which blends ceremonial-grade matcha with lavender and milk, and the Strawberry Cold Foam Matcha Latte ($7.50), topped with strawberry-infused foam.
Overall, Average Service offers something a little different.
However, you may want to visit once they’ve fully settled in and have more items on the menu.
