There are two well-known Prawn Mee stalls at Pek Kio Food Centre: one’s Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle and the other is Lai Hiang Pork Rib Prawn Mee.
Interestingly, Wah Kee used to draw much longer queues a few years ago, but the tables have turned.
These days, Lai Hiang seems to have taken the lead in popularity, often commanding the longer lines.
I think this is a combination of affordability, good service, and word of mouth.
With prices starting as low as $2.50 (wow), it offers a budget-friendly meal, especially when you are in the mood for something comforting.
The Prawn Mee ($2.50, $3, $5) comes in both soup and dry options.
The portions are surprisingly generous for the price. The bowl comes with a mix of fresh prawns, lean pork slices, and fish cakes, all topped with crispy fried shallots.
Prawns are halved and peeled for easier consumption.
The soup though simple in appearance, is still satisfying.
With that said, it is not the richest or most flavourful prawn soup around – if you are looking at something more robust tasting.
Between the dry and soup options, I find the dry version tastier. It is well-seasoned and balanced in flavour without being overpowering.
The soup version didn’t leave a strong impression, as I tend to prefer a more complex and layered flavour profile.
The one winning element is the service. The hawkers are warm and attentive, ensuring each customer is taken care of.
While the wait in line was about 20 minutes, the food made it worthwhile.
I did learn, however, that it’s best to arrive early as the stall often sells out early.
