Another new café opens at Katong.
Cafe Wabi Sabi sits quietly along Joo Chiat Road at the corner unit, blending into the colourful surroundings of the shophouses.
In case you find the name familiar, there is another outlet at Everton Park.
However, even with two stores, I do find it generally under the radar. Some diners may compare this to the previous occupant (Café Natsu) which serves pretty similar food.
Cafe Wabi Sabi’s interior is calm and understated, with a blend of natural wood tones and soft pastels.
Large windows let in natural light, and the seating options range from bar stools by the window to communal tables.
It feels like the kind of place you could slip into on a lazy afternoon, watch the world go by, and not feel rushed to leave.
The menu leans heavily on Japanese comfort food, with familiar dishes like sandos, donburi, and soba.
Sando options include Tamagoyaki Chizu Sando ($16.90), Teriyaki Chicken Medama Yaki Sando ($18.90), and Pork Katsu Medama Sando ($20.90).
For those who enjoy richer flavours, the Spicy Cheesy Medama Tori Katsu Sando ($21.90) and Cheesy Beef Hamburg Steak Sando ($22.90) are available. There’s also the Kinoko Beef Steak Sando ($23.90) for a heartier option.
Popular choices include the Pork Katsu Medama Sando ($20.90) which is simple but satisfying. The bread is soft, and the pork cutlet is crispy and juicy – exactly how you’d want it.
The combination of lettuce, tomato, and egg made the sandwich feel fresh without taking away from the star of the show.
The Spicy Cheese Medama Tori Katsu Sando ($21.90) feels a bit more indulgent. The fried chicken katsu pairs well with melted cheddar and a runny egg, with wasabi mayo adding a mild kick.
Donburi dishes range from the Teriyaki Chicken Don ($17.90) and Mentai Karaage Don ($18.90) to the more indulgent Sukiyaki Don ($19.90) and Buta Don ($22.90).
Seafood lovers can opt for the Teriyaki Salmon Don ($24.90) or the Salmon Mentai Don ($25.90).
However, it does feel like the food is missing a special something to give it an edge over competitors.
Cafe Wabi Sabi doesn’t try too hard to impress, and that’s part of its charm.
Though prices aren’t exactly low, the food is generally good, the drinks are pleasant, and the atmosphere is relaxed
