Wheathead is a bakery that started as a small home-based operation in Tampines back in 2019.
Now, it has grown into a physical store located at One-North Eden.
Tucked away at 8 Slim Barracks Rise, the space feels modern but warm, with terracotta tones and an open kitchen.
Watching the bakers at work adds to the experience, and the smell of freshly baked bread and pastries fills the air.
But note there are only a couple of seats by the side at the counter, so not somewhere you can linger long.
When I visited, there was a constant stream of people, many buying takeaways.
The selection of breads and pastries changes often, which keeps things interesting.
The Banana Cream Pie ($14) layers caramel, vanilla pastry cream, and bananas under whipped cream. The Brown Butter Honey Pie ($12) offers a rich custard with honey and brown butter in flaky crust.
The Banana Cream Pie ($14) seems to have gained a bit of a following.
It is layered with bourbon caramel, fresh bananas, vanilla custard, and whipped cream.
It was just mildly sweet but not overwhelming, and I loved how smooth and light the whipped cream on top was.
They serve it by the slice or whole, which is handy if you are bringing something home to share.
For something savoury, the Croque Monsieur Turnover ($9) packs ham, fontal cheese, and béchamel in a buttery pastry. Chocolate Chess Pie ($13) is made with Valrhona cocoa for a deep flavour, served warm or cold.
When I saw someone else at the counter order the Mortadella & Mascarpone Sandwich ($18), I knew I had to have it. No regrets.
The mascarpone is luxuriously smooth, and it pairs perfectly with the delicate, slightly salty mortadella which are stacked with quite a number of slices.
What really stands out is the pepperoncini – it sneaks up with a gentle heat that lingers just long enough.
Lighter bites include the spiced Cardamom Bun ($6), sweet Corn Muffin ($6.50), and wholesome Banana Bread ($5.50).
In terms of coffee, they do batch-brew coffee with beans from Smitten Coffee Roasters. It’s light, fruity, and smooth – the kind of cup that doesn’t need much else.
For non-coffee drinkers, there’s a cold-brew rooibos tea that’s refreshing without being too sweet.
Wheathead offers a good mix of sweet and savoury, with a changing menu that keeps things fresh.
They keep the vibes energetic like heading to a friend’s shop, and the quality of the food makes it worth returning to, even if just for a slice of pie and a good cup of coffee.
