Nasi Lemak which was once considered a humble dish in Singapore, is now more ‘trendy’ thanks to the innovative takes by various eateries.
More ’atas’, thanks to shops like The Coconut Club and Dickson Nasi Lemak.
Wild Coco is also going places, with a brand-new and much larger outlet at Circular Road near Boat Quay and McCallum Street.
Once a modest Nasi Lemak stall, Wild Coco has blossomed into a spacious dining spot celebrated for its Malaysian-style Nasi Lemak.
The restaurant has a setting that exudes cosy tropical vibe, complete with rattan chairs and thematic wall art.
The signature dish at Wild Coco is the Ayam Berempah Nasi Lemak ($16.90), which has seen a price increase reflective of its upgraded setting and portions.
This dish features a well-marinated, golden-brown fried chicken leg, served with fluffy coconut rice.
Complete with a sunny-side-up egg, crispy ikan bilis, crunchy peanuts, a dollop of their house-made sambal, and slices of Japanese cucumber.
This time I decided to have the Ayam Berempah Burnt Green Chilli ($17.90), which is another take on the traditional sambal hijau.
The chicken retains moisture while being flavourful, with aromatic blend of ginger and lemongrass flavours.
While the green chilli is smoky, what stands out for me is still the sambal.
The chilli involves a laborious preparation process to result in that nice punch and well-rounded accompaniment.
A dish which caught my attention was the Chao Ta Chee Cheong Fun ($14.90).
Taste-wise, this reminded me of Char Kway Teow, except that ‘chee cheong fun’ is stir-fried to a light char, capturing some wok-hei.
Though I think more pronounced smoky flavours can truly elevate the dish.
What I liked is the use of Kampong eggs which contribute a richer flavour.
There is an extensive menu with other items such as Chicken Satay ($14.90 onwards), Nasi Lemak Goreng ($12.90), White Curry Mee ($13.90), Kampong Yam Cake ($14.90) to Claypot Sayur Lodeh ($15.90).
Truly ambitious, I must say.
While not all items hit the home-run, Wild Coco’s dependable Nasi Lemak, Laska and other dishes served in a setting that enhances the dining experience, makes this a worthy visit.
