Tambuah Mas, established in 1981, has cemented its place as one of Singapore’s oldest and most cherished Indonesian restaurants.

For a restaurant to last this many years in Singapore, it must mean something.

While it used to be located at Tanglin Shopping Centre (which is being redeveloped), it has two outlets at Paragon and Great World.

The Paragon is also listed in the Michelin Guide Singapore.

The establishment is renowned for its traditional Indonesian Homestyle Cuisine, drawing flavors from Padang, Sulawesi, and Java.

In the Padang dialect, ‘Tambuah Mas’ signifies the request for additional servings, with “Tambuah” meaning ‘to add more’ and “Mas” referring to the server.

The authenticity of Tambuah Mas’ dishes is a testament to the generations-old family recipes that have been closely guarded and passed down through time.

One of the signature offerings at Tambuah Mas is the Tahu Telur, a dish that has been a part of the family’s culinary heritage for generations.

This dish transforms the simple beancurd into a delectable experience.

The beancurd is crisp-fried in an egg batter and served as a towering delight, generously drizzled with a homemade spicy-sweet dark sauce.

The Soto Ayam was another comforting favourite of mine, with hearty chicken broth.

You get a hot bowl of shredded chicken, bean sprouts, and a savory potato croquette, and the spice level of the soup made it quite shiok.

The restaurant’s Sate Ayam and Sate Sapi are also noteworthy.

Served with onions, cucumber, and a creamy homemade peanut sauce.

For those who prefer a rich and hearty dish, the Rendang Lembu is a recommended choice.

This tender braised beef was stewed in a traditional spice blend and coconut milk, resulting in a deeply flavorful and aromatic dish where the meat completely absorbs the sauce.

To end the meal on a sweet note, try the Es Cendol.

This homemade green bean jelly served in coconut milk and palm sugar offers a refreshing and sweet finish to the Indonesian dining experience.
