Locally inspired British fare?

Tanglin Cookhouse is not quite your usual restaurant, serving up British-inspired fare with local flavours.

Its first outlet can be found in Tanglin Mall (next to Orchard Boulevard station), an oasis near Orchard Road.

The success of the first outlet paved the way for an opening at Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ 3), allowing food aficionados in the East to relish in its contemporary British-Colonial cuisine.

Both restaurants offer an unexpected sanctuary for those in search of a serene dining experience amidst the city’s hustle and bustle.

A visit to Tanglin Cookhouse promises more than just a meal — it is an experience.

The interiors of the restaurant subtly reflect hints of the bygone colonial era, expertly interwoven with modern design elements.

Moreover, for HSBC credit cardholders, the dining deals are enticing to resist.

A 10% off on a minimum spend of $80 (from Monday to Thursday); and a complimentary slice of cake (minimum spent of $100 from Friday to Sunday) add that extra zest to the dining escapade.

What also sets the Tanglin Cookhouse apart is its diverse menu, from breakfast, brunch, both Western and Asian-inspired mains, pasta to desserts. Here’s more:

Tanglin Scotch Egg ($20.00)
The traditional British favourite consisting of a whole soft egg, wrapped in sausage meat and coated in breadcrumbs, is given a slight twist here.

At its heart of the Tanglin Scotch Egg was an oozy-yolk, cage-free organic egg, encased in a moist layer of sausage meat.

This was then deep-fried to golden with breadcrumbs, offering a delightful crunch on the outside and a soft, oozing centre.

English Fish and Chips ($26.00)
The quintessential British classic. What stood out was the beer-battered fish, golden and crispy on the outside while maintaining a tender flakiness inside.

Accompanying it were French fries and a repeat appearance of the purple cabbage slaw.

However, it was the garlicy tartar sauce and mushy peas that brought a comforting homey-ness to the dish.

Sunday Roast ($36.00)
The Sunday Roast featured a symphony of taste, including roasted grass-fed Angus beef, drenched in a robust onion gravy.

What truly elevated the experience were the accompaniments: soft Yorkshire pudding, roasted potatoes, garden peas, and an array of vegetables including roasted carrots and charred broccoli that added lovely smokiness to the mix.

Crispy Hainanese Kurobuta Pork Chop ($32.00)
The Crispy Hainanese Kurobuta Pork Chop is a nod to the traditional Hainanese Pork Chop, which is typically breaded and fried, and often served with a tangy tomato-based sauce.

Here, the pork chop, crispy yet quite a thick piece, melded quite well with the oriental tomato sauce, evoking memories of old-school flavours.

Paired with garden peas, French fries, and purple cabbage slaw, it was a dance of nostalgia on a plate.

Tanglin Style Pao Fan ($34.00)
Pao Fan is essentially a rice soup where cooked rice is submerged in a broth (Actually, I didn’t quite expect to find this well-loved dish here as it is more often found in a Teochew style restaurant.)

Here, the organic jasmine rice was combined with a seafood extravaganza of tiger prawns, crabmeat, clams, scallops, and squid. The onsen egg added a velvety richness.

The puffed rice, poured into the hot broth upon serving, ensuring it retained its crunchiness.

This technique meant that every spoonful had a mix of soft rice and crunchy puffed grains, all steeped in a rich superior broth.

Sliced Cakes ($7.50 – $9 per slice)
To end on a sweet note, you can go for the richness of the Flourless Chocolate Cake, the earthy touch of Carrot & Zucchini Cake, the decadent layers of German Chocolate Cake, or the comforting Banana Cake.

While each sliced cake had its charm, the Ondeh Ondeh stood out as a favourite. Its delicate coconut flavour, paired with the subtle sweetness of palm sugar, made it a moist delight.

Plus, HSBC card holders can get a complimentary one Slice of Cake with minimum spend of $100 at Tanglin Cookhouse from Fridays to Sundays.
