A recent cafe addition to The Star Vista, Caffè Affogato beckons visitors with the allure of its novel reinvention of the Italian classic and Bagels.
If you are unfamiliar with affogato, it is a traditional Italian treat where a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream is “drowned” with a shot of hot espresso.
The cafe itself is not entirely new to Singapore’s food scene though.
It is a relocation of The Affogato Bar from its previous address at Cluny Court on Bukit Timah Road.
The current location is at a ‘hidden’ corner of The Star Vista, at Level 1 near the side drop-off point.
Apart from their signature Affogato (which seems to take a back seat here), they also present a range of bagels and pastries.
The Bagels (starting at $3.30) come in varieties from the basic plain to the savoury sea salt, as well as the black and white sesame and multi grain.
Patrons can opt for fillings that elevate the humble bread. The offerings include an array of cream cheese flavours like sun-dried tomato, sweet basil, black truffle, and even a chocolates mascarpone.
Do note, however, these fillings come at an additional cost starting from $3.
Available Bagel Sandwiches are Turkey & Basil ($15), Smoked Salmon ($15), Deli Beef ($14), Breakfast Club ($14), Portobello Truffle ($13) and Mediterranean ($12).
During my visit, I opted for the Breakfast Club Bagel Sandwich ($14).
The toasted bagel, which was softer than many I have tried, presented a pleasant chewiness that was quite satisfying.
Encased within were layers of smoked ham, cheddar cheese, and egg, brought together by a creamy gruyere peppercorn sauce and a fresh mesclun mix.
While the ensemble was delightful, I found that the flavours within could benefit from a slightly bolder touch.
For those with a sweet tooth, the gelato, available in a myriad of flavours like apple custard, 70% dark chocolate sorbet, and Madagascan vanilla bean, to name just a few.
The pricing goes for $5.50 for a single scoop, and $10 for a double.
Caffeine enthusiasts can dive into their Coffee Floats or explore the Specialty Coffee, with beans sourced from Ozone Coffee Roasters New Zealand.
One highlight is the Bittersweet Symphony ($6.50). A harmonious blend of dark cocoa and vanilla chai, it’s reminiscent of what one might expect if a mocha and chai latte were to have a delectable offspring.
