[SEOUL] Daelim Changgo Gallery COLUMN 대림창고 is many things – a cool hangout spot, a café, and an art gallery.
Located in Seongsu-dong 성수동, you might miss it without knowing any better, unless you have already heard about the café.
On a side note, Seongsu-dong 성수동 is a trendy neighbourhood in Seoul known for its vibrant cafe culture (many with Instagram-worthy interiors) and bustling atmosphere. Make sure to add Seongsu-dong to your cafe-hopping itinerary.
Located in the Eastern part of the city, the area is home to a wide variety of cafes, each with its own unique atmosphere and offerings.
Daelim Changgo resides in a gigantic warehouse with a faded red brick façade.
Look for a piece of paper saying “Open”, pasted on a double wooden door, which indicates the entrance to the café. You may be amazed how big the space actually is.
As “Changgo” means “warehouse”, it is telling how much the café has made its location the main part of its identity.
Inside, the exposed beams, concrete flooring, wooden ledges, and spacious courtyard create a rustic industrial interior. Part of the interior has a translucent ceiling to let in natural light.
It is airy and spacious, with more than enough seating to go around everyone.
Plenty of cafegoers, from big groups to couples, can be found huddling around various portions of the café.
There is some more seating in a loft area on the second storey. Drinks are the strong suit, although a chalkboard displays a food menu with an array of pasta, pizza, and baked goods.
On display are cakes such as Tiramisu (9,000 Won), Triple Berry Crumble (5,500 Won), Carrot Cake (9,000 Won), and a wide variety of pastries.
One of the most IG-worthy items to get is the Strawberry & Cream Croissant (8,500 Won).
While not the cheapest around, it is topped with generous sweet juicy strawberries and delicate fresh cream topping adds a light and creamy element to the flaky pastry, making it a satisfying treat.
Daelim Changgo uses Geisha single origin coffee as its signature blend. A cup costs 15,000 Won, with five different blends to choose from.
Each blend offers its own distinct notes, inviting you to return a few more times to try it all.
There are simpler coffee choices, like the Caffe Latte (6,000 Won), Einspanner (6,500 Won) and Vanilla Latte (7,000 Won).
There are decaffeinated Americano or Caffe Latte (6,000 Won) to cater to those cutting down on coffee.
In addition, a seasonal drink rotates regularly on the menu. When I visited, it was the Daelim Changgo Woou (9,000 Won), served in a bottle.
The other half of the compound is an art gallery, displaying installation arts and paintings all over. Wandering around the gallery with a drink in your hand sounds like a good afternoon to me.
The exhibitions at the gallery are diverse and varied, covering a wide range of media and styles.
The gallery regularly hosts solo and group exhibitions, as well as special events and programs. Past exhibitions have included works by artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Nam June Paik, and Lee Ufan.
Daelim Changgo 대림창고 is a great place to kick back for an entire afternoon, by yourself or with your friends.
