There are many ice cream cafes in Singapore, not limited to shopping malls or tourist areas, and even within the heartlands.

You may wonder (pun unintended) if Wonders at Ang Mo Kio is just another ice cream bar.

Yes it is, but with a Mahjong theme.

Interestingly, ice cream flavours are named after Mahjong terminology.

These include 半色 (half colours) for Cookies & Cream due to black cookies and white vanilla ice cream, 红中 for Strawberry Cheesecake due to the red strawberry, 一饼 for Honey Cinnamon Biscuit, 花上 for Chrysanthemum, 绿一色 for Hojicha Mochi and 门青 for Roasted Pistachio.

I found myself having to explain to a friend what some of the terms mean. haha.

A single scoop is priced at $4.20, $8 for double scoops and $11.60 for Triple scoops, with Premium flavours such as Strawberry Cheesecake, Dark Chocolate Sorbet and Yogurt Speculous at an additional $1.

Gourmet flavours include Roasted Pistachio and Hojicha Mochi at an additional $2.

Apart from the usual ice cream cone ($1.30) served here, options such as Belgian Waffle ($6), Croffles ($4) and Pandan Mochi Waffle ($6) are also available.

Unfortunately, the waffle machine was malfunctioned on the day of visit, result in an unevenly shaped Pandan Mochi Waffle ($6).

Taste wise, it was similar to a traditional kueh with a soft and chewy texture, infused with pandan flavour.

I enjoyed the mochi embedded within it, giving it a delightful contrast in textures in comparison to the creamy scoops of ice cream.

The edges of the pandan mochi waffle was slightly charred for the nice crisp.

The white chocolate and almond, on the other hands, elevated the overall textures.

The 红中 Strawberry Cheesecake had a more fruity and citrusy touch to it, with lotus biscoff added for the malty cookie taste.

Using the Smoky Quartz blend roasted by Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee, a 2-beans-blend of Brazil and India for their espresso-based drinks, prices are reasonable starting from #3.80 for a cup of Black.

Their White ($4.20) caught my attention, served with cocoa powder sprinkled on the surface with a character 發, one of the tiles found in Mahjong, on it.

My cup of White ($4.20) has a medium body, with smooth, caramel, chocolatey and nutty taste.

With their interesting selection of ice cream, it is wonderful to have Wonders in the Ang Mo Kio heartlands.
