[PENANG] Cafe in the day, bar at night, Japanese-inspired Over and Above has opened recently in Penang.

Located a short distance from one of the places of interest in Penang – Chew Jetty, Over and Above is located on the 2nd floor of the shophouse, overlooking the Strait of Malacca.

Make you way up the flight of stairs and be greeted by a huge space, fully decked in an industrial theme.

Tall ceilings with exposed steel beams and track lights, huge glass windows with a view of the Strait of Malacca, walls with raw unfinished looks, warm lights illuminating the space create a nice and conducive environment.

With such a spacious area, I liked that the tables are spaced far apart, which creates a nice cosy corner for gatherings.

A Japanese-centric menu is served during the day with Small Bites such as Cauliflower Karaage (RM 19, SGD 6.20), Chicken Karaage (RM 26, SGD 8.50) and Lobster Croquette (RM 32, SGD 10.50).

The Cauliflower Karaage (RM 19, SGD 6.20) is well executed with a golden-brown surface and crispy texture, and a distinctive vegetal taste.

Served with spicy mayo on the side, it adds a spicy kick and additional flavour to it.

For a more filling meal, a more comprehensive selection of Mains is available: Creamy Uni & Prawn Linguine (RM 52, SGD 10.50), Beef Soba Noodle Salad (RM 36, SGD 12), Garlic Butter Salmon Donburi (RM 36, SGD 12) and Green Curry Prawn Tempura Bowl (RM 32, SGD 10.50).

Their selection of Specialty Coffee is their highlight, with fancy colourful drinks served in wine glasses such as Penang Road Factory (RM 16, SGD 5.20), Bangkok Spirit (RM 16, SGD 5.20) and Black Forest (RM 16, SGD 5.20).

I liked the instagram-worthy Penang Road Factory (RM 16, SGD 5.20) the most, made from espresso shot, pandan juice and fresh milk.

The taste does remind me of 3 Layered Milk Tea (三色奶茶), except with espresso shot replacing the tea.

The pandan milk has a nice and fragrant aroma that adds a sweetness to balance with the more robust espresso taste, which goes really well together.

The Bangkok Spirit (RM 16, SGD 5.20) is a combination of mango juice, espresso shot, fresh milk and mango espuma but didn’t really quite worked for me.

Perhaps the mango was a little sweet and the overall tasted like a cordial drink.

The Black Forest (RM 16, SGD 5.20) tasted more like a smoothie without much espresso shot in it, predominantly berries.

Only two desserts are available: Matcha & White Chocolate Cake with Cream (RM 15, SGD 5) and Milk Pudding & Mixed Berries Compote (RM 12, SGD 4).

The Matcha & White Chocolate Cake with Cream (RM 15, SGD 5) was moist and crumbly with distinctive matcha notes in it that balances well with the sweet dollop of cream on it.

Looking forward to my next visit to Over and Above during the evening when they will start serving their cocktail menu.
