Oh oh no, Forty Hands is saying its goodbye, with its last days at both Tiong Bahru and East Coast outlets on 11 September 2022.

Having the same owner as Common Man Coffee Roasters, Forty Hands is a decade-plus-old establishment that was an essential part of Singapore’s café revolution.

Moreover, it is responsible for giving the residential neighbourhood of Tiong Bahru a new lease on life, leading to its present status as a mecca of independent cafes and shops.

At a time when there are not that many third wave coffee shops in Singapore yet, I remember first writing about Forty Hands way back in 2010, and the cafe scene has definitely boomed since then.

However, it is not disclosed if the shops will be rebranded (to say Common Man Coffee Roasters) after the closure.

From its Facebook page:
”As much as we’d love for it to go on forever, we have decided to officially close our Tiong Bahru and East Coast cafes from 12 Sep 2022.

With that being said, this isn’t a complete farewell—you will find many familiar faces over at our sister brand @commonmancoffee, alongside beginnings of renewed comfort.

We promise you’ll be in good hands; after all, our coffee beans have always come from them.”

The entire process of making coffee, from bean to cup, takes 40 hands, and that is where the café gets its name.

Famous for its hipster vibes and friendly service, the café’s speciality coffees and Australian-style brunch continue to be a favourite among patrons.

Of course it is also famous for its fluffy Tau Sar Pau, and customers often pair their Red Bean Bun with a coffee to watch the world go by.

Breakfast aficionados visiting Forty Hands ought to go for their Big Boy Breakfast ($27). It’s a wholesome plate of food with plenty of ingredients to keep you seated for a while.

First, you get to choose between beef or pork sausage and can also order eggs in any style. Accompanying the two are beef Bolognese, grilled portobello mushrooms and tomatoes, sauteed spinach, flatbread, and sour cream.

I particularly liked the streaky bacon with its layers of fat, giving it a nice crispy texture and umami taste.
