Ang Mo Kio residents who are fans of the soupy ‘Bedok-style’ Bak Chor Mee need not venture all the way to Bedok 85 Fengshan Food Centre to satisfy your cravings anyway, as Soon Heng Pork Noodles has opened a second outlet at Avenue 6.

Soon Heng Pork Noodles which is known for soup-based Bak Chor Mee, is currently helmed by second generation hawker Andrew Tan, and has a stall found within a quaint coffee shop at Neil Road.

It may be slightly out of plain sight, but when you spot customers slurping away those green bowls of comforting noodles, you would be enticed.

I have tried it at Neil Road a couple of times, and loved the light yet flavourful broth matched with springy noodles.

Over at the Ang Mo Kio outlet, there are choices of the Bak Chor Mee Soup ($4.50, $5.50) with mee kia, mee pok, mee tai bak, and kway teow.

There is also an expanded menu with Sliced Pork Porridge ($4.50), Meatball Porridge, Minced Meat Porridge ($4.50) and Chicken Porridge, with options to add on vegetables, egg, and century egg (additional $0.70 to $1.20).

My favourite component is their soup broth, which is accordingly painstakingly simmered overnight using fresh pork bones and other ingredients to make it light, slightly ‘cloudy’ and relatively flavour-packed.

It is clean-tasting, pleasant, not as heavy-going or salty, and easy to finish.

Loved those minced meat pieces that are floating about in the soup, which are fresh and sweet-tasting without the gamey taste.

The wonton fillings are filled with minced meat and dried sole fish (ti poh) which are quite plump, though I thought skin could be a little on the thick side).

Add some pork lard and a notch of chilli padi for that extra flavour and kick.
