Combine Avocado and Gelato, and you get Avolato.
Avalato is a gelato cafe that serves gelato, specialty coffee and rotational bakes at City Gate. (Also read: 50 ICE CREAM & Gelato Shops In Singapore)
This is a mixed development at Beach Road (in between Bugis and Lavender MRTs, quite near Golden Mile Food Centre), and houses F&Bs such as Dori’s Devilishly Delicious Curry, ahan Thai, Sove, Evan’s Kitch, Ubin Express, and Ru’s Kitchen.
Note that the cafe space is limited, and can allow seating for 2 tables only.
The name Avolato actually came about from the owners’ love of avocado, so they decided to incorporate both the names together.
For their house specialty, you get a base avocado flavour with various seasonal pairings.
All gelato flavours are freshly churned in house, with constant R&D on different flavours depending on the season and occasion.
Interesting to note that even for their avocado-based flavours, they are available for a limited period only and likely to change every month.
Best sellers are the Avocado Lime, Froot Loops, Hazelnut, Rum and Raisin, and Belgium Chocolate.
There are other choices which include the Bourbon Whiskey Dark Chocolate, Belgium Chocolate, Black Sesame, Cappuccino, and Red Dragonfruit Yogurt.
A single scoop is priced at $4.30, double at $8, with premium and house specialty flavours priced at $5 or $5.50 per scoop.
These can be paired with cones ($1), charcoal cone ($1.50), waffles ($5.50), croffle ($3.50), croissant ($2.50) or UFO panini bun ($3).
I decided to go for the house-specialty of Avocado Gula Melaka ($5.50 per scoop), and it had a lovely smooth and creamy texture, with delicate avocado taste that lingered. It reminded me of my favourite Alexandra Village Avocado Shake but in a solidified form.
To be honest, I wished there was a pure Avocado flavour without the drizzling of the gula melaka as the strong caramel-sugar taste could have overpowered the more subtle avocado.
The Black Sesame flavour was nutty and earthy tasting, though wasn’t as creamy-smooth as the Avocado. Still not bad.
The waffles tasted like an old-school style with a chewier and doughier inner layer.
There are also other bakes such as Fudge Chocolate Cake ($4) and Banana Sourdough Cake ($4).
I do think Avolato has the potential, but wished they could play with the Avocado-theme a lot more.
For example, there could be more Avocado-based gelato flavours (only one when I visited), Avocado drinks, and Avocado décor around perhaps.
