We have found and reviewed quite a number of hidden ‘hole-in-the-wall’ cafes in Singapore, but let’s just say this discovery still came as a surprise.

Even if you are familiar with Holland Village, you may just walk past this hipster indie coffee shop without realising its existence. Plus the cafe does not have a strong social media presence.

Yes, Caffeine Xpress is found inside Thambi Magazine store, probably one of the most iconic news-stands in Singapore.

Even with the spread of digitisation and online magazines, Thambi Magazine Store at Holland Village is still well-known for carrying many titles from all around the world – thousands of them including hard-to-find ones.

Now within this colour magazine shop is a small and humble coffee place called Caffeine Xpress.

Primarily a take-and-go place, you find your “daily cure” of Espresso ($3), Long Black ($3, $4), White ($4, $5.50), Mocha ($4.50, $6) and Caramel ($4.50, $6). A change to oat or almond milk is at additional $1.

Non-coffee drinkers can go for the Matcha ($4, $5.50) and Chocolate ($4, $5.50).

Would say the prices are a dollar or two less than most cafes.

Caffeine Xpress uses an expresso blend from local Six Four Coffee, a medium roast with low acidity, flavour of milk chocolate and hazelnut with smooth and long after taste.

I loved their coffee which was of medium body and well balanced, though some who need a stronger fix may find this on the light side.

There were a couple of rotating cakes offered, which was surprisingly baked in-house by the owner’s brother.

When I visited, there was the Lemon Meringue Pie ($4.50) and Blueberry Cheesecake ($6); and admittedly I initially wasn’t expecting too much out of it because this wasn’t from some established patisserie.

But I was pleasantly surprised at the smooth and tangy lemon filling and fluffy toasted meringue topping of the pie – pretty good.

Just a reminder to self to keep our eyes wide open, because hidden gems always around Singapore waiting to be discovered.
