Ghim Moh Food Centre is full of hawker gems, with many enjoying long lines during peak hour lunch time.

The Michelin Bib Gourmand listed Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck, Kong Shang Hua Wanton Noodles, Jiu Jiang Shao La, Ghim Moh Carrot Cake, Hin Fried Hor Fun, Chun Seng Noodle House, and Guan Kee Fried Kway Teow are just some of them.

63 Laksa is also a stall that I noticed enjoys relative popularity, with customers waiting patiently for their bowl of $2.50 and $1.30 Mackerel Otah.

(It was from queueing that I realised people do have various combinations for even a one-dish stall… want/don’t’ want chilli, want/don’t want hum, want/don’t want beansprouts, gravy packed separately. Tough.)

The reason why this stall is 63? If you know Hokkien, try reading “63” out loud.

The stall is said to specialise in “Sungei Road-style Laksa” though there is no relation to the current Sungei Road Laksa at Jalan Besar.

The hawker’s grandfather used to sell Laksa at Jalan Besar in the 60s – that’s why.

Interesting to note that there is a newspaper clipping showing Aung San Suu Kyi trying their Laksa before.

63 Laksa believes in preparing ingredients fresh everyday, and therefore the hawkers start their prep work from 5:30am everyday (except Monday when they are closed). They start operations at 8am.

It is hard to find a $2.50 bowl of Laksa in recent times, and I was surprised at its taste.

The gravy while looking light and on the more watery side, was flavourful with coconut fragrance. And it came piping hot, and thus was comforting for a colder weather day.

There was delicate creaminess and some saltiness and layered taste coming from the dried-shrimps added.

While I am not the biggest fan of cockles, the hum was fresh-tasting and considerably plump.

They also serve the Laksa with just a spoon, but the thick beehoon would be cut up in just nice lengths, for you to slurp up smoothly.
