This is the year when “Ex-XXX (insert famous restaurant name) Chef opens a kopitiam stall at…” to many media features and long queues.

It makes foodies excited because it brings more variety and colours to the coffeeshops, and quality food (okay, some debatable) right in the heartlands.

In a manner of just a couple of few months (and this is right smack in the middle of several dining-in restrictions), Chef Wei HK Cheong Fun has opened six Chee Cheong Fun stalls around the island. He plans to open twelve eventually.

From the first at Bedok which attract an-hour’s wait long lines, there are now newer outlets at Blk 40 Holland Drive and Blk 429 Jurong West Ave 1.

Operational hours are from 7am to 8:30pm.

Chef Thoo Chang Wei who is an ex-head dim sum chef from Peach Garden (Hotel Miramar) makes these rice rolls fresh from scratch over hot steamers.

While he has a bigger team now, my Cheong Fun happened to made by him (lucky day) during one random visit to the Holland Drive unit.

I did find the thickness of the skin differing during another visit – Chef Wei’s version was definitely thinner and therefore gave a better mouthfeel.

There are four choices on the menu, Plain Cheong Fun ($3), Mushroom Cheong Fun ($4), Char Siew Cheong Fun ($4), and Prawn Cheong Fun ($5).


The Mushroom Cheong Fun is an original creation from Chef Wei, with the smooth and moderately thin rice rolls filled with shitake and shimeiji mushrooms.

For this price, you do get quite a sizable portion which was indeed restaurant-quality Cheong Fun in terms of the silky skin. It would have been more wonderful if the skin was thinner.

The drizzled Hong Kong-style sauce was fragrant and on the sweeter side, and I found myself having to put some of the addictive chilli sauce to balance out the sweetness.

Somehow, even though it was the same sauce, the Prawn Cheong Fun ($5) worked better for me with the fresh prawns giving a good bite.
