A pioneer stall that has been around since 1974, the 2nd generation hawker of the family will be opening a new outlet at Bedok – Blk 59 New Upper Changi Road.
The opening date of the Bedok outlet is 26 Nov 2021, with operational hours 10:30am to 9pm.
Western Barbeque is famous for its old-school Western style dishes.
The signature item is the Mixed Grill Set ($11) which includes chicken, lamb and pork, fries, coleslaw and an egg.
The other items are Chicken Chop ($6.50), Chicken Cutlet ($6.50), Pork Chop ($6.50), Sirloin Steak ($11), Lamb Chop ($10), Fish & Chips ($6.50), and Chicken Wing ($6 for 4 pieces) plates.
They are most famous for their garlic sauce, and note that only four plates come with it – the Mixed Grill, Pork Chop, Lamb Chop and Sirloin Steak.
I had the Pork Chop ($6.50) – a piece of pork loin quite evenly grilled, tender enough with a good bite.
The slab was probably pounded so that it would be thinner and not so tough. But yes, the magic has to be garlic sauce.
The sauce is created using more than 10 ingredients and the recipe has remain unchanged for more than 2 decades.
If you are going for something without the garlic sauce… Between the Chicken Cutlet and Chicken Chop (each $6.50), I preferred the former which somehow tasted better marinated and succulent.
The cutlet is however not the typical breaded type, but the skin was well ‘fused’ with the succulent meat.
There was also another interesting item on the plate, which is an old-school butter bread supplied by Victoria Bakery & Confectionery, spread with butter and wrapped in plastic bag.
The bread was fluffy with some of that familiar sweet taste. Use that and dip into some of the garlic sauce.
However, there were no baked beans and the generic tasting fries were on the colder side. I would recommend adding an egg.
