Kok Kee Wanton Noodles 国记云吞面 will open its fourth outlet in Singapore at Ang Mo Kio Ave 4, come 13 October 2021.
After being acquired by Jumbo Group for 2.1 million, it has quickly expanded.
Its main location is within the Bistro 8 coffeeshop at 30 Foch Road, while the other outlets are at Marina Bay Sands (Rasapura Masters) and Toa Payoh Lor 6.
There is another Kok Kee Wanton Mee stall at 505 Jurong West Street 52 #01-14, said to be operated by the niece of the owners.
Established since 1985 Lavender Food Square, Kok Kee has been part of many regulars’ growing up years. I first had it during secondary school days, and had been a favourite with my family over the years.
There are those who call Kok Kee the “Best Wanton Noodles in Singapore”, but yes debatable.
Some say it is “overrated”, and used to taste much better in the past.
The line used to extend all the way till outside the coffeeshop, though it is much shorter now.
A plate of Wanton Noodles at the main outlet is priced at $5, and there are other items such as Dumpling Noodles ($5), Dumpling Soup ($6, $7), Vegetables ($6, $8, $10), and Fried Wanton ($7 for 11 pieces).
Note that prices vary depending on location. A plate at the Ang Mo Kio outlet is $4.50.
To keep things consistent across outlets, there is standardisation of processes and centralising production of certain produce at the central kitchen.
Kok Kee’s winning element is probably the special secret recipe sauce, poured all over the noodles with an agreeable bite.
I did prefer the noodles in the past though. Somehow after the revamp, it tasted more soggy with less of the QQ bite, but at least it didn’t have that strong alkaline taste.
If you remembered those thin char siew (that sometimes borders on tasting card-boardy), they have been updated, machine-cut, and not as dry.
To be honest, the pretty-average wantons were nothing to shout about.
The other typical order are the Vegetables. Somehow, Kok Kee cooks them till they are quite soft yet retained the crunch, and without the usual bitter taste associated with many vegetables.
