Inconspicuously nestled within the shophouses of Hougang Central is Samwitch, a breakfast kiosk which serves hearty sandwiches aka “sando” with fresh milk tea made using natural ingredients.
I was greeted by a young lady in her late twenties who shyly shared that she has always been inspired by Taiwanese breakfast store and wanted to offer something similar in Singapore.
The kind of hearty offerings akin to what you would usually provide for your families and love ones.
Dang, I miss the good old days of having Taiwan breakfast toast such Comida 可蜜達炭烤吐司 and Golden Flower Toast 金花碳烤吐司專賣. Perhaps the nearest alternative now is Fong Sheng Hao 豐盛號.
An advocate of healthier choice, she assured that all ingredients used are ‘real food’ and does not contain artificial flavouring or preservatives.
There were only three sandwich options available at point of visit – Beef Sando ($12), Fish Sando ($11) and Chicken Sando ($11). (Note that previous the Beef Sando was $8.90 when this post was first published.)
The Beef Sando left a positive impression, filled with tender cured meat texture and flavouring.
While the menu didn’t explicitly describe further, I could detect woody aroma of black pepper which provided occasional sharp spicy notes from the seasoning.
On the other hand, I found the Chicken Sando a little too healthy for my liking as it was topped with tons of shredded carrots to go with grilled chicken meat.
I could probably use some ‘sinful’ sauce dressing such as lemon mayonnaise to give it a tangy twist.
Good thing is, they were generous with meat fillings which almost over-flowed when it was being cut into half.
Their sandwiches were also topped with cheese and flame-torched to give it a slight smoky whiff.
They also offer Fresh Milk Tea ($3.00) to go along.
A “healthier” brew concocted using only assam black tea, fresh milk and raw sugar, I found the blend rather on point with good ratio of sweetness with underlying earthy tea notes.
While the menu is slightly limited for now, I look forward to new additions perhaps such as OTT Cheese sandwiches to relief a taste of Taiwan breakfast toast please.
