Craftsmen Specialty Coffee is no stranger to many cafe lovers, with multiple outlets in Singapore such as Clarke Quay Central, Holland Village, Mohd Sultan, Siglap V, Novena and Eastwood Centre.

The folks behind Craftsmen has opened a new concept PRAIRIE by Craftsmen at Cluny Court, next to Botanic Gardens Exit A and can be accessed via the basement carpark entrance.

There is also a second outlet at River Valley.

The word “Prairie” refers to a type of habitat mostly occupied by grasses and flowering plants with occasional shrubs and trees.

Here, you will walk past a mini stretch of bamboo “forest” before reaching a huge courtyard with a total of 40 seats outside.

A beautiful space with natural sunlight pouring through the sunroof and hanging plants that create glasshouse vibe.

I must say I was pretty impressed with this alfresco dining area, with a touch of greenery that resonated with their name “Prairie”.

Inside, the indoors area can accommodate another 40 pax, with a long communal table as the centrepiece with warm lightings that create a cosy and homely feel.

Breakfast is served from 7:30am to 11am whereas lunch menu starts from 11am.

Expect the usual breakfast items such as Morning Granola ($13), Eggs on Toast ($12), Smoked Almond & Avocado Croissant ($16) and Acai Bowl ($15).

Bakes such as Croissants ($4-6), Muffins ($6.90), Sourdough $12/loaf) and French Baguette ($5.50) are stated on their menu but only 2 items are available on the day of visit.

For their lunch and dinner menu, it is more comprehensive and includes Starters ($10 – $21), Salads ($14 – $23), Mains ($24 – 34), Pasta ($23 – $30), Burgers ($18 – $25), Skinny Pizza ($19 – $23) and Desserts ($6 – $16).

Their desserts menu looked more interesting but pricier at the same time, with Basque Burnt Cheesecake ($14), Eclair ($14), Passionfruit Meringue Tart ($15) and Creme Brûlée ($14).

Unfortunately, there was only one dessert and I ended up choosing the Basque Burnt Cheesecake ($14), price on the high side for a slice.

Frankly speaking, I had high expectations for their Basque Burnt Cheesecake, given the price point.

Coming with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and berries sauce served by the side, I was slightly disappointed.

The menu stated that that it will be served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and almond crumbles but it was replaced with berries without informing beforehand.

Furthermore the Basque Burnt Cheesecake lacked the definitive component of the ‘burnt’ outer layer, resembling the usual cheesecake.

It had a texture like a Japanese cheesecake being light and moist without the gooey characteristic of a burnt cheesecake.

Coffee is supplied by Craftsmen Specialty Coffee, so you can expect interesting flavours such as Roasted Almond Latte ($7), Butterscotch Latte ($7), Macadamia Nut Latte ($7), Salted Caramel Latte ($7), Coconut Latte ($7), Gula Melaka Latte ($8) and Baileys Latte ($11).

Non-espresso based drinks include Chai Latte ($7), Black Sesame Soy Latte ($8), Matcha Latte ($8) and Taro Latte ($7).

My cup of Macadamia Nut Latte ($7) had a nutty and earthy fragrance with a smooth and medium body without any acidic tone.

The Dirty Matcha (Hot $8, Iced $9) came aesthetically pleasing with 3 separate layers of matcha, milk and espresso.

I wished that the sweetness level can be reduced to bring out more aroma and fragrance of the matcha instead.

PRAIRIE by Craftsmen can the place to hangout in the open space for a cup of coffee in a unique and spacious courtyard, perhaps when they iron out their operation kinks and provide a more differentiated menu.
