Apparently, a branch used to be at NTU Canteen 2 as well.
Come here (#01-53) during evening times, and you would most likely find a line outside Western Barbeque. (Do exercise appropriate social distancing.)
Take note that the wait can be longer than expected, as the hawkers also need to handle the ‘unseen’ delivery services via Deliveroo and GrabFood.
Customers would be given a buzzer though, so they won’t have to hang round like bees. However, my wait turned out to be closer to an hour, even though I was informed 25 minutes.
Western Barbeque is famous for its old-school Western style dishes such as the Chicken Chop ($6.50), Chicken Cutlet ($6.50), Pork Chop ($6.50), Sirloin Steak ($10), Lamb Chop ($10), Fish & Chips ($6.50), and Chicken Wing ($6 for 4 pieces) plates.
The signature item is the Mixed Grill Set which includes chicken, lamb and pork, fries, coleslaw and an egg.
I had the Pork Chop ($6.50) – a piece of pork loin quite evenly grilled, tender enough with a good bite. The slab was probably pounded so that it would be thinner and not so tough.
But the magic has to be garlic sauce.
The sauce is created using more than 10 ingredients and the recipe has remain unchanged for more than 2 decades.
Not all items get that garlic sauce though, only the Mixed Grill, Pork, Steak and Lamb.
Between the Chicken Cutlet and Chicken Chop, I preferred the former which somehow tasted better marinated and succulent.
The cutlet is however not the typical breaded type, but the skin was well ‘fused’ with the succulent meat.
There was also another interesting item on the plate, which is an old-school butter bread supplied by Victoria Bakery & Confectionery, spread with butter and wrapped in plastic bag.
The bread was fluffy with some of that familiar sweet taste. Use that and dip into some of the garlic sauce. Yums.
Unfortunately there were no baked beans and the generic tasting fries were on the colder side. I would recommend adding an egg in retrospect.
