How many Shake Shack do we need in Singapore? Five (or more next time) apparently.

Shake Shack’s fifth Shack is said to open this “winter” (weird, doesn’t exist in Singapore) at VivoCity. The burger brand has also partnered with award-winning local artist Eeshaun to create a mural inspired by the lively Harbourfront neighbourhood (Fun-fact: The DanielFoodDiary logo is also drawn by Eeshaun. haha)

The SG fifth outlet will be located at 1 Harbourfront Walk #01-163/164 VivoCity, Singapore 098585 (which used to be occupied by Artisan Boulangerie Co.)

[The following is a review of Shake Shack’s Orchard outlet.]

This is the burger brand’s first branch at Orchard Road, with the other two outlets are at Jewel Changi Airport and Neil Road. The 4th is at Suntec City.

If you are wondering where Liat Towers is, the building is next to Wheelock Place and houses Zara and Hermes.

I think it does help bring some traffic and buzz to this part of Orchard Road, because many don’t travel beyond ION Orchard on the same belt.

This is the first Shake Shack in Singapore with alfresco seating, which can possibility offer Shake Shake fans more space for social distancing.

It can get a little hot and stuffy, but I enjoyed that mini-garden-in-the-city vibes. Can imagine that it would be a great place to hang out IF during a possible period of Christmas lights and cool December weather.

Local artist Danielle Tay is behind the indoor and outdoor murals for this third Shack. For the outdoor mural, Danielle draws inspirations from the Swan Lake and Sundial Garden in Botanic Gardens.

New to Shake Shack?

It is a fast-casual restaurant known for its 100% all-natural Angus beef burgers, flat-top beef hotdogs, spun-fresh frozen custard, and crinkle cut fries.

It offerings include ShackBurger ($9.20 for single, $12.70 for double), SmokeShack ($10.90, $14.40), ‘Shroom Burger ($10.80), Shack Stack ($14.30), Hamburger ($7.50), and the newly introduced Chick’n Shack ($9.20).

If you have never had a Shake Shack before, then you can probably try getting either the SmokeShake (get the double) or the Shack Stack which contains a combination of crispy-fried portobello mushroom, the signature juicy Angus beef patty, and slice of cheese.

Having crispy mushroom and moist patty, while messy to eat, gives the overall bite a more layered contrast.

Not sure if it is psychological, but law of diminishing marginal returns at work, I remember having a slightly better burger at Jewel.

I also tried the Chick’n Shack ($9.20) which contained crispy chicken breast, lettuce, pickles, and buttermilk herb mayo.

Probably a safe choice for customers who are not inclined to take beef, but nothing very exciting about yet-another chicken burger. Go for the juicier and more distinctive beef who is really their signature.

While there are no new additions to the burger side, there are two exclusive Concretes and five lemonades at this Orchard outlet.

The two new Concretes are the Orchard Traffic Jam ($7.50 for single, $9.50 for double) and Pie-Oh-My ($7.50 for single, $9.50 for double).

In Shake Shack’s term, a “Concrete” is NOT cement paste, but frozen custard mixed with different mix-ins. Ice cream lah!

The Orchard Traffic Jam is vanilla custard blended with blueberry lavender jam, lemon curd and shortbread, topped with fresh blueberries.

However, the Pie-Oh-My caught my attention as it is blended with Treacle Pecan Pie from Tarte by Cheryl Koh. Chef Cheryl Koh was previously awarded Asia’s Best Pastry Chef 2016 by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

True enough, the crunchy, buttery pie bits with slightly sticky texture was the best part of the bowl – sinfully good, though with the vanilla frozen custard it was overall too sweet and would send one to a sugar high.

With the hot weather outside and extreme sweetness, you probably need one of the Hand-Shaken Lemonade ($5.30) – available in lychee, blueberry or mango flavours; or the Sparking Lemonade ($5.30) with passion fruit and raspberry to cool yourself down.
