“Eh, that is Aun Koh…” My friend pointed him out, but we didn’t get to meet as the author behind Chubby Hubby was walking out of Clan Café. Even in my 10 years of food blogging, we never really got acquainted.
Clan Café at 31 Bukit Pasoh Road is the new baby of Aun Koh, Wee Teng Wen of The Lo & Behold Group; and Sally Sim who has more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry.
It is located on the ground floor of Straits Clan – a members’ only club; and the space used to house New Majestic Hotel.
During the short time period I was there, I already spotted many who’s-who who came in and out. I suddenly felt underdressed as this was an impromptu lunch meet, but thankfully nobody recognised me (even when there was a media tour going on.)
I also acknowledge that this is a food review of sorts for an establishment for a food blogger whom I was reading before I even started writing (or typing).
To be objective, it was indeed a space we liked immediately upon walking in, actually from the moment we saw the Instagram account – and this is when reality looked as pleasant as the gallery on social media.
Designed by local firm Takenouchi Webb, there were the tropical elements that would make you want to sip on a Pina Colada, yet it felt classy enough to be able to hold a quick business meet-up.
My friend thought there were parts that reminded her of a beautiful and welcoming living room.
In terms of food offerings, you get nourishing bowls, salads, soups, brunch items (all available till 6pm), and bar snacks (available from 6pm till late).
The Otah Sandwich ($16) though slightly on the pricey side, was the best thing I had there – of soft brioche that came with a light crisp, sandwiched with a slab of mackerel and prawns otah.
My grandma used to make otah sandwiches that were jam packed with ingredients, because they were for family.
Other than the fact that this was a modern version, and came with comte cheese, the slices reminded me of hers.
The Grilled Angus Ribeye ($19) with mixed grains, onsen egg, carrots, lotus root and mushrooms, was overall more ordinary comparatively.
We were encouraged to order a top-up of Spiced Beef Broth ($7.50 for top-up, $9 for ala carte) which we were thankfully did as the soup added more heartiness and flavours when poured over the rice.
The slice of Kueh Salat ($6.90) is another must-order. I initially thought it was a Chalk Farm, but turned out to be made from a recipe by Chef Jeremy Nguee’s mother.
The pandan layer was aromatic and smooth; and even the glutinous rice layer was soft enough, with a tinge of butterfly pea flower purple providing more aesthetical value.
The name “clan” may remind some of kinship and heritage, and I am glad Clan Café made an inclusion of these local elements, including the Peranakan inspired tiles.
