The CBD of Singapore has been flourishing in terms of food and drinks, with new entrants and regulars upping their game with revamped offerings.

If you are near Raffles Place and need your meal fix, Republic Plaza boosts of more than 15 F&B outlets, serving food and coffee at wallet-friendly prices.

From Japanese bento sets, Taiwanese rice boxes, protein-packed salads, hearty soups, gorgeous cakes, and good coffee, you get everything under one roof.

Republic Plaza is also connected through to Raffles Place MRT, where you get an entire dining area offering fresh and tasty meals. Here’s what you can expect:

Chef Icon Nature Bakery
Republic Plaza #01-13
Tel: +6588585877
Opening Hours: 8am – 7pm (Mon – Fri), Closed on Sat, Sun & PH

Cakes and desserts made of natural ingredients
Healthy desserts? That has become a reality. Chef Icon calls their desserts and cakes “natural”. It was assuring to find out that their objective is to move from artificial ingredients, with their bakes free from animal meat, rennet and gelatin.

What you get are cakes that may look simple in appearance, but rich in texture with depth in taste.

The café with a small seating area also offers a selection of bread, desserts, sandwiches and burgers.

Get the Chocolate Trovana ($37.80, 500g whole cake) and White New York Cheesecake ($37.80, 500g whole cake) which are available daily in store, while note that the other whole cakes such as Boston Cheesecake ($37.80, 500g whole cake) require at least 3 days in advance order.

Recommend: Pistachio Tart ($8.80)
Also called the “Chef Tart”, this is Chef Icon’s top-selling piece. I liked that the tart tasted smooth with chocolate, had a buttery crust topped crunchy pistachio nuts.

As the tart is made “healthier”, you don’t get that super-rich feeling after having one.

In terms of the meats, go for the Thai-inspired Lemongrass Chicken Thigh, Sukiyaki Beef (+$1.50) or Peppered Smoked Duck (+$1.50).

Recommended: Owner’s Favourite Salad Pack
The owner of Omivore recommended the personal favourite pack of Sous Vide Lemongrass Chicken, Tomyum spicy shrimps, Kimchi tangy apples, cha soba, sesame seasoned tomatoes, completed with a hanjuku egg with sesame dressing.

I liked the Oriental dressing too, something different from the usual, which provided a more savoury take.

Republic Plaza #01-16
Tel: +65 6536-0169

Good tasting, good looking Japanese cakes
Japanese cake lovers should be familiar with this shop, helmed by Chef Tomoko who makes gorgeous-looking and moderately priced Japanese pastries.

Additional tip: they have newly introduced Flower Jellies which are totally pretty.

Recommended: Strawberry Soufflé
Their signature cake is the Strawberry Soufflé ($5.90 for sliced, $42.00 onwards for whole).

Teppei Syokudo
Republic Plaza #01-14
Opening Hours: 10:30am – 8:00pm (Mon – Fri), Closed Sat, Sun, PH

Well-loved signature Kaisendon
Teppei Syokudo needs little introduction, where their well-loved Signature Kaisendon ($16.00) with 6 types of raw seafood mixed with Teppei’s special sauce has been very popular among office workers.

Here’s a food tip: Teppei Syokudo has also introduced new bowls of Pork Katsu Curry ($15.80) and Teriyaki Chicken Bento ($14.80) which make filling, oishii takeaways.

Recommend: Teppei’s Kaisendon ($16)
Do you know that this best-selling bowl contains generous servings of 1:1 ratio of seafood to fluffy Japanese rice?

For sashimi lovers, you get thick cuts of Salmon, Tuna, Sea Bream, Whelk, Baby Scallops and Salmon Roe tossed in Teppei’s sweet-savoury special secret sauce. Fresh and always a favourite for fuss-free lunch.

Other than The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s signature beverages (Black Forest and Sunrise are my favourites) and cakes, you can also look out for their All-Day Breakfast items such as Breakfast Platter ($12.90) with scrambled eggs, sausage, sautéed mushrooms, turkey bacon on panini bread; sandwiches filled with smoked salmon, tuna mayonnaise, chicken mayonnaise and honey mustard chicken ($9.50 – $11.90); and pasta dishes.

Recommended: Smoked Chicken Salad ($11.90)
For a lighter meal, newly introduced is a Smoked Chicken Salad ($11.90) where romaine lettuce will be topped with quite-tender smoked chicken breast, cherry tomatoes, dried cranberries, almond flakes and drizzled with sesame dressing.

Pair the salad with a refreshing summer drink of Mint Lime Sparking Tea ($6.50) or Swedish Berries Sparkling Tea ($6.50).

The New Black
Republic Plaza #01-23A
Tel: +65 62336806
Opening Hours: 8:00am – 7:00pm (Mon – Fri), Closed Sat, Sun, PH

Audacious selection of artisan coffees and teas
If you are looking for a coffee spot which offers strong coffee, wifi and plugs, let me direct you to The New Black.

I jokingly told the barista if I needed to stay awake for my meetings, this is where I would come first.

The New Black serves up wide range of coffee from an entry-level brew ($4.60), a 10-oz Latte ($5.60) to Cold Brew ($6.10). Their feature roast is called “Big Trouble” – nutty, caramelly, smooth coffee flavour, which comes all the way from Durham, North Carolina.

Pair the coffee with a slice of Carrot Cake ($4.00), Mango Cake ($4.20) or Chocolate Croissant ($3.00).

Recommended: The New Black Lunch Set
The lunch set interestingly features 3 items at a wallet-friendly price – Chicken Croissant, Quiche and Date Cake all at $7.50, which includes both savoury and sweets.

TWG Tea Salon & Boutique
Republic Plaza #01-22
Tel: + 65 6538 1837
Opening Hours: 10:00am – 8:00pm (Mon – Fri), Closed Sat, Sun, PH

Signature teas and tea-infused food
Do you know that TWG Tea Salon & Boutique’s very first outlet in Singapore is at Republic Plaza?

Look out for the new savoury recipe and exclusive tea-infused dessert every week, available in their All-day Set Menu from 12pm to 8pm.

Some of the highlight dishes and cakes include Lobster Avocado Timbale ($28) with spinach salad drizzled with a Love Me Tea infused vinaigrette; Eggs Benedict ($19) with mesclun salad tossed in an 1837 Black Tea infused vinaigrette; and Chocolate Truffle Cake ($12) topped with a scoop of Earl Grey Fortune & Chocolate ice cream and served with Vanilla Bourbon Tea infused chocolate crumble.

Recommended: Black Cod and Black Tea Dashi ($28)
If you are looking for something light, possibly elegant for a meal or during a working-lunch meeting, go for the Black Cod complemented by a dashi broth infused with black tea.

This feels like a French-meets-Japanese dish, with pan-roasted black cod accompanied by steamed baby nai bai, shimeji and sautéed oyster mushroom, served with garlic Korean brown rice.

The best component, to me, is the dashi broth infused with Meleng FBOP and French Earl Grey, both refreshing and flavourful.

Isshin Japanese Restaurant

Using freshly prepared salmon from Norway, the Salmon Set is a spread of food. You get 4 items of Salmon – Salmon Sushi, Salmon Sashimi, Salmon Teriyaki, Salmon Maki, along with Udon and Salad.

So much omega-3 in one set.

StopOver Artisan Pasta
Republic Plaza #B1-03A
Tel: +65 9382 0146
Opening Hours: 11:00am – 4:00pm (Mon – Fri), Closed Sat, Sun, PH

Handmade fresh pastas with delicious sauces
The chefs here hand-make all the pastas and sauces every morning, so that customers can get restaurant quality pastas at more inexpensive prices.

How it works here is that you can customise your own pasta by choosing the size ($9 or $13), pasta type (fusilli or tagliatelle), with any of the side sauces (Bolognese, Carbonara, Chicken Raggu, Arrabiata, Trapanese, and Aglio e olio).

Recommended: Bolognese or Chicken Raggu Sauce On Pasta
The classic favourite at this café is the Bolognese, a homemade simmered red wine sauce made with vine ripe tomatoes, 100% ground beef, spiced herbs and vegetables.

A lighter sauce would be the Chicken Raggu white wine sauce, simmered with ground chicken, herbs and vegetables.

Republic Plaza #B1-04
Tel: +65 6535 7814
Opening Hours: 7.30am – 8.30pm (Mon – Fri), Closed Sat, Sun, PH

Sub sandwiches, wraps, salads and more
Subway probably needs little introduction. Do you know that their most popular subs include the Tuna ($5.50 for 6”), Subway Club ($6.40 for 6”) and Roast Beef ($7.10 for 6”)?

If you are there early enough, also look out for the breakfast range (from $2.90 onwards) which includes Bacon, Egg & Cheese; Egg & Cheese; Ham, Egg & Cheese; and Sausage Egg & Cheese in flatbreads.

Recommended: Subway Melt
Still one of the most popular subs, the classic Subway Melt ($7.10 for 6”, $10.90 for 12”) contains lean and tender sliced turkey, ham and crispy bacon topped with melted cheese and served with choice of fresh vegetables and condiments on freshly baked bread.

All for 347 kcal.

For Tasty Dumplings, La Mian and Fried Rice
The Asian Kitchen is known for its range of hand-pulled La Mian noodles, Fried Rice dishes, and Dumplings.

It is called “The Asian Kitchen” for a reason, and you can probably find a wide range of offerings from Ginger Roast Chicken ($11.50), Signature Beef Fried Rice ($11.90), Kimchi Pork Fried Rice ($11.90), Village Tofu ($7.20), and Nonya Fish Slices ($10.80).

Recommended: Original Roast Chicken
The Original Roast Chicken ($10.50) is interestingly cooked in an oven, and not oil bath so that the overall dish is healthier while keep the skin crispy and meat tender.

If you are up for something spicy, the Roast Chicken is also available in a Mala version ($11.50).

The Gourmet Bakery
Republic Plaza #B1-05
Opening Hours: 7.30am – 7.30pm (Mon – Fri), Closed Sat, Sun, PH

Freshly baked bread and sandwiches
Do not miss out on The Gourmet Bakery which is at a cosy corner of Basement@RP. Established since 2009, a key feature about them is their objective of baking of healthier sourdough breads with less use of salt and no preservatives.

The texture comes across a lighter and chewy version of dense European breads.

One of their best sellers is the black Charcoal Scrambled Egg Burger ($5.90), with other fillings such as cheddar cheese, romaine lettuce, and a touch of mayonnaise, which makes a good breakfast takeaway item.

Recommended: Baked Eggs
Sandwiches and breads available include Roasted Veggie ($3), Scrambled Egg & Ham ($5.90) and Bamboo Baguette with Chicken Mayo ($5.90).

Be careful when having the baked eggs, as they are still deliciously runny.

The Herbal Bar
Republic Plaza #B1-07
Tel: +65 9185 2835
Opening Hours: 8am – 8pm (Mon – Fri), 11am – 4pm (Sat), Closed Sun, PH

For nutritious soups and rice cooked with natural ingredients and herbs
The soups at The Herbal Bar are first created by the owner’s mother, who is a TCM practitioner and incorporates elements of Chinese medicine in the recipes.

Office workers love their soup as they are comforting and nourishing, just like how a mum would have prepared them. Less oil, less salt, no added MSG.

The offerings here include Ginseng Chicken Soup, Fish Slice with Tofu and Seaweed Soup, Detox Kelp Soup, Healthy Mushroom Soup and Mixed Beans with Lotus Roots Soup. The last two are vegetarian.

Recommended: Mini Buddha Jumps Over The Wall
Other than the Chinese Cabbage Fish Maw and Meatballs Soup which I would recommend for its handmade pork-fish balls, the best-selling item is the Mini Buddha Jumps Over The Wall packed with ingredients from abalone, scallop, fish maw, shitake, to pork ribs.

Wholesome broth with lots of collagen.

Wheat Design Your Own Bowl
Republic Plaza #B1-08
Tel: +65 6533 8616
Opening Hours: 10.30 am – 8:00pm (Mon – Fri), Closed Sat, Sun, PH

Design your own bowl
WHEAT is one of the newest additions at Basement@RP, providing balanced meals with inclusion of protein, fibre and carbohydrates.

You can either customise your own bowl from $9 onwards, or pick one of the six recommended Chef’s Special, which includes Broccoli & Cauliflower Chicken Bowl ($10), Beef & Foie Gras Rice Bowl ($18.90), Swordfish Quinoa Bowl ($13), and Char Siew Pork Belly Rice Bowl ($12.90).

Recommended: Broccoli & Cauliflower Bowl
Instead of having the usual carbs as the base, a unique point is that broccoli and cauliflower are chopped into bits, using vegetables to replace rice.

Paired with chicken meat, avocado, sous vide egg, spinach and aojiso dressing, this makes a healthy meal for those on a low-carb diet.

Woo Ricebox
Republic Plaza #B1-06
Tel: +65 6532 2820

Taiwanese rice boxes
Widely known in Taiwan as Woo (悟饕池上飯包), this is one of Taiwan’s most popular chains for rice boxes with more than 70 years of history.

They offer bento rice sets served in wooden riceboxes, and signature items include Signature Braised Pork Ricebox , Railway Pork Chop Ricebox, Spicy Braised Chicken Ricebox, Crispy Chicken Cutlet Ricebox and Hot & Spicy Drumstick Ricebox.

Recommended: Signature Braised Pork Ricebox
The Signature Braised Pork Ricebox ($6.80 for dine in, $6.50 for take-out), is similar to the Taiwanese local street food of “Lu Rou Fan”.

Woo uses premium short-grain rice, added with seasonal vegetables, pickles, and braised egg. All very healthy tasting.
