[Updated April 2015] The café trend in Singapore continues to be waffles with ice cream, with no less than 20 new cafes in Singapore serving this combination.

The Creamier effect? In the early days, we had Udders, Island Creamery, The Daily Scoop, Tom’s Palette and Alfero Artisan Gelato who all had a loyal following.

The later days of Stateland Café, Hatter Street, Waffle Slayer which spouted hipster (it’s such a ‘bad’ word now) type cafes specialising in American or Belgian style buttermilk waffles topped with home-made ice cream.

Here are 20 new places to satisfy your waffles and ice cream cravings!

Rabbit Owl Depot
420 North Bridge Road #01-06 Singapore 188727 (Bugis MRT, opp National Library, diagonally opposite Bras Basah Centre)
Tel: +65 63364075
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm Daily

If you are the type who finds the standard round waffles too big and filling for an after meal dessert, Rabbit Owl Depot’s Snow Flake Waffle ($6.50, $9.50 with ice cream) could win your heart over.

The crispy and brown edge of the Snowflake Waffle, spread with smooth ice cream (get the coconut ice cream.) was a delightful combination that could send a smile on a lazy afternoon. Easily one of my favourites waffles around. (Read: Rabbit Owl Depot)

Sunday Folks
44 Jalan Merah Saga, #01-52, Chip Bee Gardens
Opening Hours: 4pm – 10pm (Tues-Fri), 12pm -10pm (Sat-Sun). Closed Mon

Sunday Folks won the instagram waffles competition, if there is any, hands down. Soft serve on waffle – Pretty max, but melts too fast.

The freshly baked Belgian waffles ($8.80 for single waffle with ice cream, $11.80 for double) take at least 15 minutes during non-peak hours, accompanied by strawberries and blueberries drizzled with maple syrup and chocolate hazelnut sauce. I prefer this to the original Creamier at Toa Payoh.

The Little Prince Creamery
Lor 6 Toa Payoh Blk 47 #01-134 Singapore 310047
Tel: +65 8684 8218
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Sun-Mon, Wed-Thurs), 12pm – 11pm (Fri-Sat), Closed Tues

This is an ice cream café based on that famous story, and the setting is very beautiful.

The hand-crafted gelato is said to contain only 8% fat and is eggless, with flavours of Pistachio, Hazelnut, Noir (dark chocolate), Rum and Raisins, Earl Grey Latte, Funky Monkey (peanut butter, banana and stracciatella), Fairy Berry (blueberry, strawberry and cranberry), Mango Kiss (yogurt base) and a dairy free Pineapple. ($3 for classic, $3.90 for premium). Waffles are decent. (Read: The Little Prince Creamery)

The Hideout
Blk 32 Cassia Crescent #01-50 Singapore 390032 (Mountbatten MRT, 5 min walk from Exit A)
Tel: +65 64400971
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm Daily. Closed Tues

While Singapore is perpetuated with ice cream of that certain creamy type, The Hideout’s classic gelato texture with local flavours is appealing. Dense, smooth and velvety. On the flipside, I wished they could go with at least 20% less sugar.

Their buttermilk waffles would please those who prefer a crisp outer layer, with a darker finish, better than some popular cafes with never-ending weekend queues. (Read: The Hideout)

Pick Me Up Café
Parkland @ ECP, Blk 1A Unit 02, 920 East Coast Parkway, #01-02, Singapore 449875
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Tues-Fri), 9am – 10pm (Sat-Sun)

Pick Me Up Café at East Coast Park uses home-made yogurt gelato from Yogurt Story ($4.50 for single, $7.50 for double).

Its peanut butter waffles “The Hippie” ($15.90) topped with fresh banana slices, crushed peanuts, salted caramel gelato and organic (yes, organic!) maple syrup, looks like one of the more promising waffle to try. (Read: Pick Me Up Cafe)

The Milky Way Homemade Ice Cream and Coffee
Blk 48 Tanglin Halt Road Singapore 142048 (Commonwealth MRT)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Sun- Thurs), 12pm-12am (Fri-Sat)

Campus Superstar Alumni Renfred Ng has went from singing to ice cream making, now the owner behind The Milky Way Homemade Ice Cream and Coffee at Tanglin Halt.

Waffles ($5.00, add $3 for 1 scoop of regular ice cream) come in half and half, crisp on the outside and fluffy enough. The Milky Way presented theirs in a different way from all the rest, and I personally find the portion more manageable. Pistachio ice cream is one of their best sellers. (Read: The Milky Way)

Seriously Ice Cream
Blk 4 Everton Park #01-44 Singapore 080004 (Outram MRT, walk towards Cantonment Police HQ, Everton Park is across the road from it)
Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm (Mon, Wed, Thurs, Sun), 11am – 11pm (Fri, Sat), Closed Tues

Seriously = Healthy. Their ice cream comes with a lot less sugar, some even sugarless. It has become possible. Try the ice cream flavours before making your purchase decision. Some will appeal to you, some may not.

The texture of their version ($4.50 for plain, $9.60 with 2 scoops) reminded us of the biscuit used to sandwich old-school ice cream. This light, crispy waffle with lots of air pockets could appeal to the 30-something and above (*cough cough*) who had this familiar taste before. Savoury waffles are also available. Twenty Grammes

Tel: +65 67171733
Opening Hours: 12pm-10pm (Sun-Thurs), 12pm-1am (Fri-Sat)

Twenty Grammes is the ideal weight of coffee grounds to pull a good espresso shot, and also the name of a new Ice Cream Waffles Café at North Bridge Road.

I liked both the ice cream flavours selected – Boysenberry (berry based) and Honey-Scotch (honey flavoured with crispy butterscotch). The texture belonged to the creamier and dense type, and tilted more to the sweet side. Waffles was okay. (Read: Twenty Grammes)

Enjoy delicious ice cream concocted in our very own kitchen, with flavours of Earl Grey Lavender ($2.90), Elvis ($3.90), Mao Shan Wang ($3.90) and Chocolate Sorbet ($3.90). Opening Hours: 5pm – 11pm (Mon), 12pm – 11pm (Tues-Thurs), 12p – 1am (Fri-Sat), 12pm – 11pm (Sun)

Photography shop meets ice cream café. Ice cream texture was smooth and likeable – not too sweet, rectangular butter waffles has a crisp outer layer, created from a homemade recipe.

I particularly liked the Pistachio, one of the best I had, with a strong nutty flavour and I learnt that the pistachios were air flown from Bronte Sicily. Hazelnut (nuts air flown from Piedmont) and Dark Truffle Chocolate were other two of the recommended. (Read: 5 The Moments Tanjong Pagar)

What distinguished Fat Cat from all the other ice cream and waffle cafes all there were the plated desserts, as though they brought fine dining to the heartlands. Their signature gourmet Charcoal Waffles served with salted egg yolk custard sauce ($6 w/o ice cream) comes in limited quantities. Crispy and fluffy, WILL appeal to the masses. Hmm… Flower Waffles. Their Blossom Waffle forms individual Hearts when split in 4 pieces, Ice-Cream Cones when split in 8 pieces. Gelato flavours ranged from Nuts About You (Hazelnut), Chocolate Valrhona, Pistachio to Fior di Latte, which tasted like our daily cup of fresh milk. Real fruits were used in their sorbets with flavours such as Mango, Lemon, Banana, Passionfruit to the interesting “You Can’t Guess This” Cherry Tomato. (Read:

Chapter 55
55 Tiong Bahru Road, #01-37, Singapore 160055 (10 min walk from Outram Park MRT)
Tel: +65 6221 2219
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 11pm (Mon-Sun)

Their Signature Gelato Waffle comes with up to 2 scoops of gelato of your choice ($14 for single, $18.50 for double). Looks-wise, it was pretty much the same as the other 2 outlets with their signature cocoa powder dusted logo on the plate. We took a double-take on its price, a tad higher than other ice cream waffles in the market.

Gelato flavours available ranged from fruits (strawberry and rock melon) to chocolate (ferrero rocher, snickers bar) and alcoholic ones (lychee martini, champagne vanilla). (Read: Chapter 55 Tiong Bahru)

Bunny and Pony
Blk 1 Changi Village Road #01-2000, Singapore 500001 (Take Bus 2, 29, 59, 109 to Changi Village Bus Terminal)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 9pm (Tues-Thurs), 12pm – 10pm (Fri-Sun) Closed Mon

Bunny and Pony offered the usual repertoire of ice cream, waffles ($8.10 with a single scoop, $10.10 with a double scoop), coffee and cakes. The waffle had a slight crispy exterior and fluffy interior, just the way we liked it to be.

The gula melaka flavour ice cream was thick and creamy with distinct palm sugar taste. It would be good to tone down the sweetness by a notch, whereas the lavender flavour had a distinct floral scent and refreshing taste. (Read: Bunny and Pony Changi Village)

Montana Brew Bar
1 Selegie Road #01-04, Singapore 188306 (10 min walk from Dhoby Ghaut MRT)
Tel: +65 98331790

Montana Brew Bar conveniently located at POMO described itself as an “urban chic coffee brew bar”. Chocolate Banana Waffles ($10.50) was the usual best seller. I mean chocolate + caramelised bananas could go no wrong. We also tried the Waffles Suzette ($9.50) with orange compote, caramelised orange, vanilla ice cream, but much preferred the chocolate version for its softer texture. Oh, have we mentioned their gorgeous Red Velvet Waffles Stack ($10.50) yet?

Note: No ice cream sold here, but there’s always Nookie Yogurt next door. (Read: Montana Brew Bar POMO).

The Cold Pantry

The Cold Pantry had pushed their limits with a totally instagrammable and awesomely sounding (with a touch of nostalgia) Chocolatey Waffle with a hint of Root Beer topped with freshly churned charcoal vanilla ice cream drizzled with… chocolate Root Beer sauce ($12.50). Other than that, they offer other interesting and weird flavours from Thai Milk Tea yogurt to a Movie Date froyo ($5.90) with nacho chips and popcorn.

  1. How come Merely Ice Cream is not featured. I swear it's the best homemade ice cream parlour in SG with one of the nicest waffles i've had. Furthermore, super value for money. ($5.80 for a single scoop and waffle, where to find his kind of price. and a single scoop is almost the size of tennis ball)
