Taxi uncle didn’t know where “Nucleos Biopolis” is. Who would blame him, and he also could not comprehend why someone would go all the way there just to drink coffee and eat cake.

Yes, as if Revolution Coffee and Hoopla are not enough, newer cafes such as Curbside Cafe & Wine Bar and Bakersfield have joined in the One-North neighbourhood which makes this ‘ulu’ research and development district kind of cool.

Curbside means ‘side pavement’ and the owners want to create the similar feeling of being carefree and approachable. (The song of “Pretty Woman” somehow rings in my head immediately.)

With beans from Yahava Koffeeworks, the coffee was surprisingly pleasing – smooth, rich flavoured with an excellent aroma. Acidity was medium, the way I liked it. Black ($4.00), White ($4.50) or Choc-based ($5.00).

The menu is divided into ‘Early Bird’ (from 8am onward), Brunch, Croissants & Bagels, Salads & Soups, Chips & Fries Sandwiches, and Mains.

For mains, some of the more interesting items include the Cod & Chips ($17), The Cheeseburg ($17), Mac & Cheese ($15) and Coca-Colo Beef Stew ($16).

Their signature desserts include the RVCB ($10) – may sound offensive but it means Red Velvet Cheesecake Brownie, and the S’more Dip ($90.

The Red Velvet Cheesecake Brownie ($8) was AWEsome, the type of dessert that can single-handledly define a café and make people return for more.

Its outer layer was a thin layer of swirled cheesecake, with the inner brownie moist yet light enough – not like the typical brownie. When I asked the wait-staff where they got the cake from, the reply was, “Oh, by Sam our boss herself. She is so cool, I tell you. And she is taken!”

O.Kay. TMI. The wait-staff team was a bunch of cheerful, candid people who made you feel right at home. Plus, the café opens early enough and closes late to cater to the working crowd in the vicinity.

A people-focused café – nice. By the way, we saw the boss Samantha on the way out. The staff is right – she IS very cool.
