Ah Hoe Mee Pok 阿和麵薄 – Famous Mee Pok Stall Opens Eatery At Tanjong Katong, Not Quite The Same Anymore
Food ‘wars’ and rivalry seem common.
In such cases, there is usually the XXX Stall, and The Original XXX Stall is somewhere around.
I was a fan of Ah Hoe Mee Pok 阿和麵薄, then quite widely-covered as there was an intriguing story of Japanese man and daughter cooking up the local fare of Bak Chor Mee. That branched out into another stall “Ah Li Mee Pok”.
Now, Ah Hoe Mee Pok has become a full-fledged eatery at 297 Tanjong Katong Road (near both Engs).
Then, there is also an “Original Ah Hoe Mee Pok” at Food Loft Coffee Shop, 501 W Coast Drive. Jeng, jeng, jeng. I shall leave it to the Ah Hoe, Ah Li and Original AH Hoe Mee Pok fans to enlighten me on the back-story and drama.
The current Ah Hoe Mee Pok at Tanjong Katong serves up Signature Mee Pok ($6, $8, $10), Special Crayfish Noodle ($15, $20), and Handmade Dish Ball Noodles ($6).
There are some other side dishes available such as Handmade Deep Fried Tofu ($6), Deep Fried Pig Trotter ($25), Hong Kong Kailan ($6), and Bean Sprouts ($6).
Empty eatery when I visited Sunday evening. Hmm… Anyway…
I ordered the Signature Mee Pok ($6) and Mee Kia.
Starting off with the positive note first. For the price, I think it is ‘value for money’ with its generous ingredients of a prawn, minced meat, and canned abalone slices.
Loads of crispy pork lard as well.
Portion of noodles may seem lower in comparison, but I am not that fussy over it.
The moment of truth. In terms of taste, it was heaven and earth when compared to the earlier versions I tried.
This was mostly lukewarm, noodles not that well-cooked, and the balance of sauces seemed off.
It wasn’t very much different from what you get, say from an average food court. Unfortunately.
The only consolation was that the soup was relatively tasty, possibly cooked with both pork bones and prawns.
I felt kinda disappointed as I had fond memories of Ah Hoe Mee Pok – that hot piping bowl tossed in sauces which those umami flavours, and wondered what happened along the way. You feel… sad?
Perhaps this makes up a decent meal if you are in the vicinity, but I won’t come all the way to Katong for this. To be honest.
Then again, skip the horrid coffee.
