Jian Hong Beef Noodles 建宏牛肉麵 – “Michelin” Taiwanese Beef Noodles At SGD4, Opens 24/7 Near Ximending Taipei

[Taipei] There are quite a number of well-known Beef Noodle shops in the Ximending area of Taipei.

Niu Dian (or Niou Dien) Beef Noodles is easily the most popular among tourists, while Lao Shandong, Fuhong Beef Noodles, and Jian Hong Beef Noodles all have their own fans.

I took note of Jian Hong Beef Noodles 建宏牛肉麵 when it was listed in the Taipei Michelin Bib Gourmand guide.

While is it not located near a train station, getting here is not that hard – about a 5 to 10 minutes’ walk from the main Ximending food street.

The one feature is that the beef noodle joint opens 24/7, which can satisfy your hunger from wee hours of the morning to middle of the night.

Compared to other noodle places, you may not even suspect that this shop has a Michelin-recommended due to its no-frills interior.

The inside looks like a canteen, with rows of tables and stools, filled with diners who are mainly students and workers in the vicinity. It was not all the time crowded, and some bored workers may have eyes fixed on the hanging TV screens.

To a tourist who cannot read traditional Chinese, ordering may be tricky as there is no English menu.

Offering include Beef Noodles, Mixed Beef Noodles, Beef Innards Noodles, also available in soup versions.

They all come in 3 sizes, priced at an inexpensive NT$90 for small, NT$100 for medium, and NT$110 for a large bowl (SGD4, 4.40, 4.85.) This is considering some stores are selling theirs double the price.

Another plus point: Diners can get refillable soup and noodles.

To be honest, while the Australian beef and tendon were cooked quite tender, the same cannot be said about the soup.

The broth with mild herbal taste was decent enough though not particularly memorable, when compared to the other famous brands.

Perhaps it could have been more robust, flavourful with more depth.

The noodles had an agreeable QQ al dente texture, but rather thick though.

I found myself needing to add more of the chopped preserved cabbage chilli ‘butter’ to add more taste to my dry Braised Pork Noodles.

It is a place popular with locals and I can understand why – cheap and good for its price. 24/7, free refills, why not?
