Cow and the Moon - "World's Best Gelato" Found In An Unassuming Shop In Sydney, Australia

[Sydney] No offence to the Italians, it is interesting to know that a gelato shop from Sydney was actually crowned the world’s best gelato.

This gelateria located in Enmore (near Newtown) won the award for best gelato producer in the world in 2014, and continues to be a major attraction for gelato lovers in Sydney.

The award was won for their Mandorla Affogato flavour.

It is also ranked #1 place to eat in Enmore on Trip Advisor, and it also has a “Certificate of Excellence” on Tripadvisor.

The family run business, owned by Wendy and John Crowl, has been opened since 2011.

Owner John Crowl travels to Italy every year, and he honed his skills in gelato making whilst working at a Milanese gelateria.

He has even trained the people at Gelato Messina (probably the most famous gelato from down-under) in making gelato, so it goes without saying that he is an expert at his craft.

Cow and the Moon, a short 10 minute walk from Newtown train station, is an unassuming small shop with brick walls, peeling paint, black boards with white text – the type that you may just walk past without noticing.

There is a selection of 25 flavours, they all focus on high quality ingredients (e.g. seasonal fruits/flowers) and exceptional taste.

I spotted Hazelnut Rocher, Lychee Coconut, Cookies & Cream, Apple Wasabi Sorbet, Pomegranate, Hokey Pokey, Roasted Coconut, Poached Strawberry Balsamic, Mango Sorbet, Green Tea, Bella Chocolate, and of course the award winning Mandorla Affogato.

Served as scoops, or in a waffle cone, the different options include Small AUD$6 (SGD$6.14), Medium AUD$7.80 (SGD$7.98), Large AUD$9.50 (SGD$9.72).

You can also get take home packs – Small 500ml AUD$14 (SGD$14.32), Regular 1L AUD$23.50 (SGD$24.04), Large 1.5L AUD$29.50 (SGD$30.18)

The famed Mandorla Affogato uses caramelised almonds which they source from Italy, and the coffee is a single origin that sits on a Madagascan vanilla ice cream.

Verdict: It was extremely creamy, with smooth mouthfeel that would make you lick with joy, and the flavours come off really strongly.

On the flipside, I thought that it was nearer to the overly-sweet side.

The owners used to have a bakery, so they also have some cakes, pastries and chocolate offerings in their store.

There should be a flavour to suit every palate, and they are constantly changing so you will want to keep coming back to see what is new.
