1st Singapore Idol winner Taufik Batisah is now boss of Chix Hot Chicken, which specialises in Nashville style Fried Chicken.

Can sing, can act, can sell chicken.

This Muslim-owned eatery is a partnership with Bober Ismail who used to co-own Life Is Beautiful restaurant known for its buttermilk fried chicken.

It took over the space at Jalan Pisang, which used to be occupied by The Lab.

Nashville style fried chicken is commonly known as “Hot Chicken”, sauced in a pasted spiced with cayenne pepper. The pieces are served atop slices of white bread with pickle chips.

Over at Chix Hot Chicken, the options come in Quarter ($9.90) with choice of thigh and leg or breast and wing; Half ($18.90) or 3 Whole Wings ($10.90).

You can choose between Mild Hotness, Extra Hotness or Insane Hotness.

My friend wasn’t too keen on the “Insane”, and the cashier encouraged us to give it a go at the “Extra Hotness” then passed us 2 plastic cups.

”Water is free here lah. Take, take.”

This is when you CANNOT miss out on the chicken skin, which is typically rubbed with ground cayenne peppers and in this case, ghost peppers.

It already sounded scary.

The ghost chili is rated at more than 1 million Scoville heat units (SHUs), thought by many as the world’s hottest pepper – it is not, but enough to encourage YouTubers to eat it as a challenge.

The chicken didn’t taste that intimidating at first, and then the fieriness slowly kicked in. You won’t feel that immediate spiciness, but that tingling feeling just won’t leave.

Bober shared, “It will usually go off about after 10 minutes.”

Mind you, this was only Level 2. However, the eatery is still experiment with the levels, as they received quite varying feedback from “too hot” to “can go more”.

I was distracted by the peppers to really focus on the chicken. But from what I remember, the meat was juicy and flavourful.

The “Insane Hotness” is seasoned with Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper, typically rates at 2 million SHUs. To try when you are feeling bored with life, or playing Truth or Dare.

Also available are The Original Flavour ($9.90, $10.90 $18.90) for those who want to thread on the safe side.
